NM archery, 15 or one of the 16's?

As a non-resi which do you recommend? I'd rather set my sights high on this hunt as my time will be tight and I probably don't want to draw unless it is a really good hunt. Unit would have to be mostly public land. May hire a guide but would like the option not to as well. Any ideas?

15 for sure. It is an archery / ML'er unit only. No rifle tags.

I actually think 17 is better than the 16's, trophy wise. Not the numbers of animals of the 16's though.

good luck

as an outfitter in NM I can tell you that 15 is an overrated unit. Unit 16c has as many 330+ bulls as any other Gila unit and MUCH easier to draw. Also dont over look unit 17 both on the first hunt.

lots of people stepping over each other in C. I hunted it last year. Beaverheads guides running amuck didn't help things either. They didn't care if you were working a bull or not, in they came.

I hunted with Beaverhead in 16C a few years back and my partner was using a Beaverhead guide and another Beaverhead guide ran in on them while they were calling and had a nice bull almost in shooting range. The bull spooked and my friend did not geat another chance that year. The 2 guides almost got into a fight that evening at camp, one got mad and quit working for Beaverhead.

Wow crazy , what about 16B , I hunted 16b four years in a row , killed my first elk with a bow there , five of us killed six elk in four years bow hunting there . If a guy wants to get away from road hunters , 16B is deffinately the unit . Horses are nice but it can be hunted with out them as well . I wished they would have added a muzzy hunt in there , but that ain't ever gonna happen....I'll stay closer to home and go 52 now , not the monsters the Gila is known for , but theres alot of em to play cat & mouse with ....NMHUNTNUTT

LAST EDITED ON Jan-26-06 AT 08:02PM (MST)[p]Also, Jack Diamond from Beaverhead had a road blocked off about 2 miles from where it dead-ended. He didn't want anyone disturbing "his area" on national forest when I was heading in to hunt a couple canyons over there...ticked me off. I guess used that same dipstick logic when he blocked off a forest service road that had been open for years and years that went through his property and into forest service lands--wonder why the forest service didn't fight the breach of easement.

Also, it didn't appear that any of his hunters scored a bull on that outdoor show last year. Also one of his clients said that no one had scored a bull in their camp next to the last day of the season....Bob and I did see a real bummed out lookin' client about half way thru the trip around lunch time on the way back to camp...lol~! I don't think I'd recommend their services. One guy I ran into out there said he liked Jack since he bought cow tags from him on occassion--so, I guess he's not pure evil...lol.

Guy's all I can tell you about the problems with Beaverhead is hunt somewhere they are not. I don't hunt for Jack, I hunt for Taylor Mtn Outfitters. Year after year I hear of the same thing, but it is a quite simple remedy. SCOUT, SCOUT, SCOUT. Find an area with VERY limited access and go hunting. Don't you think that if your in 15,or 16A or D that USO is going to be around you?

If you target areas that other people don't go than you hunt bulls other people are not hunting. I have gone 3 years in 16C with great success, and only 2 incounters with other hunters. But you have to be willing to put forth the effort.

Quit blaming every body else and hunt where there isn't any body such as getting out of the truck and walking 2 miles if that's what it takes.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-29-06 AT 01:16PM (MST)[p]Whoa bubba..... Who said we weren't a couple two three miles in? We'd quad to different entry points and hike on in. 16C isn't a pack-in/wilderness unit last time I looked.

Jumping to conclusions doesn't get ya very far along in life.

Bob had a Beaverhead guide run right past him with a client while working a bull. Bob motioned to him, "What are you doing?!" And the guy only said, "I've got a paying client"....Lame excuse for pi$$-poor sportmanship...I have no respect for at least that guide and it doesn't reflect well on Beaverhead Service.

Yeah, I had a good hunt. Yeah, I was into elk. I had shot opportunities. The only thing even slightly negative that occurred on that hunt was Jack Diamond's attitude when I encountered that white vehicle blocking a forest service road...that's illegal last I read.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-29-06 AT 02:56PM (MST)[p]In my advancing age I've tried to resist getting into a pi$$ing match on the internet. I had a great hunt as Bill just mentioned. Beaverhead guides were a pain for every camp we knew of. They were just rude, everybody else got along great and we made some new friends.
I've seen cattle drives and now I can honestly say I've seen a beaverHead elk drive.
I've seen it all now.
If I hear you working a bull, he's yours. If I can hang back and call so you can move in, I'll do it.
I will never recommend Beaveread. There were other stories from our friends camped in the area too. When you are in a unit that's got roads in it courtesy really helps. When I tell my kids to act a certain way, I try to act the same way, even when I'm hunting.

OH, and the only off road excursions we saw were from trucks. all the quads stayed on the road and parked, then went walking in to hunt.

What did the guides client do? I've never been on a guided hunt, but I'd be too embarresed to be part of some of the allegations mentioned.
