Wasatch Late

How many of you would still try to draw this hunt with 10 tags? I don't think it is a bad move to lower the tags to a proposed 10 with the huge success of this hunt, but people applied last month assuming there were more. I am thinking my wife might not draw with 12 points now. Those of you who thought 10 points might do it, there is always next year. Looks like the early hunt would have been easier to draw. 300 tags.

What are your feelings Wasatch late applicants? Would you switch if you could? How do you feel about a 60% decrease after you applied?

KTC,
It's a guessing game either way. If the elk units are going to be managed strictly by age class then I see no reason why we didn't have these numbers during the application period. I always thought the delay was to get post hunt counts but that doesn't seem to be the case. They should set a date to have all the harvest data returned so they can have permit #s ready during the application period. I didn't mean to hijack your post but it did bring up this question.

No Hijacks.

I think I was wondering the same thing as you. I was surprised to see the decrease. Considering the hunt it is not all bad, but I would bet some people are going to be livid. Wasatch late was a hot ticket this year and any hopes of beating the odds on this hunt just went out the door. 12 points for my wife is not enough is my guess. Many others felt pretty good with 10 points, but they have no shot at all now. I bet this topic gets raised at the RAC meetings.

The DWR would be better served to be hashing this out for next year would be my opinion to eliminate the guess work and gamble.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-08-06 AT 12:05PM (MST)[p]When I heard of the overall increase of elk tags I assumed the Wasatch late also increased. I felt pretty good with 10 points but now I will have to wait til next year. I debated seriously about amending my application to the early hunt but in the end I stuck with the late.

@!%!#$%#@%@# Sometimes I think the DWR is always looking for ways to screw with me! I'd stayed with my original application if I'd known this. Oh well, I'm sure I can find something else to do:)

Where are you guys getting the proposed numbers????

KTC,

I must be looking in the wrong place, I was just looking in the latest proclomation and it shows that for the early rifle hunt last season there were 76 permits for the wasatch. You put in your post that there was going to be 300 tags? Please tell me where you got that figure from. I, like you have max points and I am ready to hunt this year so I put in for the early rifle hunt in the wasatch - I live in Highland / Lehi area so this was a hunt I could drive to easily if I wanted.

Thanks for your help!

LAST EDITED ON Mar-08-06 AT 04:38PM (MST)[p]I put 300, but in post one I chnaged it to 150. I think it is actually 160 to be exact on the early hunt.

Look at the link in the post above your post.

You will be hunting. No doubt about it.

OK now I'm starting to see the picture and I'm starting to get a bit PO'd:(

Honestly after the early hunt slaughter that could take place on the Wasatch I'm not sure I'd want a late tag.

I'm thinking if I had the money and had purchased a conservation tag for the Wasatch or Manti I'd be a bit pissed. Maybe the DWR will turn the Wasatch and Manti into the land of the 300 bulls after all.

I'm singing a new tune after looking at where the increases are coming from.

Why is it the DWR continues to screw with the Wasatch? From Doe tags, to cow tags, to lowering the buck tags, and then to raise them again the next year. Now lets take the cautious approach and DOUBLE the number of early rifle RUT tags. Any guess on how many they'll give in 2007? Probably stay true to form and pull a "Fishlake!" OOOOOPPPPPPPPSSSSSSSSSS!

This Prism thinks the DWR has officially made the NE region and Wasatch unit the red light district of Utah game management. BRING YOUR PROTECTION!
