Arizona Archery Elk Suggestion

I will be applying for AZ archery elk for the first time. Any suggestions on units?

If you are a NR, I would skip Arizona. You will have to spend around $130 to build points that you likely will never get to use in a quality unit. You also do not find out if you drew Arizona until you have already made plans to hunt other states.
That aside, you need to define what type hunt you want to have. As a NR, I am only interested in a top end bull. I can hunt other places for an average bull.

Not true. You CAN draw a tag in AZ. There are "top end" bulls in every unit. You just have to know where to look. They are easier to find during archery, but I have seen them every year during the November hunts. Just don't apply for an early rifle bull or archery in 8,9,10 and you WILL have a chance for drawing a tag.

Warren,
What do you consider a "top end" bull?

I agree with scremin. Here's what I posted on the other thread about Arizona elk:

"I've been drawn for archery bull elk 3 times in 18 years. So, every 6 years I draw a good tag. Not too bad, IMO. You need to keep in mind, there are good bulls (up to 360") in ALL elk zones...including the less hyped-up ones. It's all about draw odds and what type of bull you'll settle for. Once you know how the game is played you'll draw more often.
Don't over-look the low density hunts either. A little scouting goes a LONG way. :)"

I'll only add that if you're after a 400" caliber bull (which beyond popular belief is NOT common), then you'll probably be applying for the popular zones and may never draw...even with archery. However, if a 320-360" bull will suit you, EVERY unit in Arizona can produce that, IMO.

If your after a big bull in Arizona, this is probably not the year you will want a tag with a Severe Drought. The world record non-typical antlers found by Josh Epperson in unit 8 was estimated to score around 390 the previous year (2002) during the drought, and put on around 60 inches the next year (2003) much wetter year to become the world record. Shawn Patterson's typical world record (2005)in unit 10 grew during a very wet year also. That shows what water can do in Arizona and this year we don't have any. Although I also think any year you can draw a tag it would be good one, but this may be one of the worst years.

My nephews and I are just looking to have the opportunity to see and hopefully kill some nice bulls. We will not be passing up 330 class bulls in hopes of taking a 400 class. My nephews will probably stick the first thing they see that has visible bone above the ears. From what I understand about the drought, there probably will not be many 380-400's out of AZ this year anyway. So I guess I am looking for general info on units that would give the best opportunity for success rather than success on a monster. Anybody have suggestions?

I have grown up here in AZ and have had the opportunity to hunt in most of the units. A 330-350 class bull is very common in every unit! My advice is to apply for units with higher draw odds that still have good bulls. I would look at units 7,4a, 5b, 6a, or 27. I would probably put in for one of the 7's first choice and 5B second. These units have good numbers and 300"+ bulls everywhere. I've seen a ton of nice bulls in 5B south, plus it's mostly public land. just my two cents.

AZtrophyhunter I wasn't saying you had a chance at a world record, just explaining how much water benefits a bulls antler growth.
Hogliver for rifle bull with decent draw odds 6B has a high density of elk. 7 East has the best draw odds out of all the good bull units but the hunt can be a bit more challenging. There's a lot more big bulls in 7 West and your chance of drawing isn't bad. Good Luck, I hope your nephews draw this year!

I agree with Warren and believe he is right on.

I went on my first elk hunt as an observer/pack mule in 1990 in AZ, with my good friend who was an outfitter at the time. Have been applying to the quality unit(s) every since and no bull elk draw yet. Did not apply every year, but have a fist full of bonus points and hope to draw some day. I hunted with my friend last year in AZ and most of the NR's I spoke with who drew had been applying for around 15 years. You guys can sugar coat AZ all you want, but it is darn impossible to draw there, but then again somebody has to draw. And yes, there are always the folks who draw with low bonus points, but the percentage of that runs uncomprehendablely low.........................................

Hogliver, you menitoned good bulls and a friend who will shoot anything, there are lots of places with good bulls. We did not draw in MT this year, but hoping for NM and will go to OR if necessary. OR is crowded, but I have stuck a 340 bull there. In fact, I am always getting into 280-360 bulls in MT, NM and even OR. If you are willing to get off the roads and bust some tale to get back in the woods, there are alot of great places to hunt elk other than AZ.

My opinion and only my opinion, unless you are obsessed with taking that 400 class bull, why waste you time and money, especially money after the 2007 fees kick in on AZ? Many will disagree with me, but if you study the odds, see the statistics and have a boat load of bonus points like I do, then you will ralize that AZ is truly a NR elk hunters dream that may or may not come true. I hope I do not sound bitter for not drawing yet as this is surely not my intent as I have just as much fun chasing them bulls with my AZ resident buddies, without a tag.

By all means, apply with the rest of us, but get focused on the other states as well and make sure you are chasing some bulls every September, somewhere! Best of luck to you!

Regards,

JL

AZtrophyhunter,

I was cruising 4b mostly with my resident buddies who had drawn there. Talked to several guys who were hunting 3C, which is the unit that the nr's had been applying to for 15 years and where I have applied most of the time (I know, a tough one with low tags). One guy I taked with hunting 3C said he passed a 380 class on the first day, hoping for a 400 and not wanting to tag out on day 1 after 15 years of applying. He was a week into the hunt and that 380 was the biggest bull he had seen, but had another week to go. Hopefully he tagged a big one. Also, talked with some boys from Phoneix who had taken two 350 class after holding out for 400's for the first week or so. Did you draw last year in AZ? Best of luck this year.

Hogliver,

I hope I am not insulting you, but why not a COW elk ? As a non-resident you have a VERY good chance to draw a cow tag (no cap)and you will get some time to spend with your nephews in the beautiful country. Then you can see the big bulls everybody talks about.

As a non-resident with the non-resident cap on bulls, and the 20% max bonus point pool, you can FORGET about drawing a bull tag with 0 points, you can probably forget it for the next 10 years.

I dont think it is only non-residents that have to wait and wait for a tag, most residents (myself included) cant draw. I have been a resident for 9 years and have never had an AZ elk tag so it isnt just a non-resident issue, it is supply and demand....... Thanks, Allen Taylor......

Legend, yeah my bro had a tag last year & scored on a nice 363 bull. I think it's funny how everybody is after that 400 bull but settles on a 350....I'd venture to say that these bulls aren't even 350. Anyways, that's all great area up there. 4B isn't the trophy capital of AZ but there are some nice ones around. Allen, maybe this year is your year! It's gotta be.... :) Good luck on the draw.

Allen this has to be your year, or somebody in your family. I've seen you guys go to long without a tag. Good Luck!

I have to second Madman's opinion. I had the time of my life watching my son take his first elk (cow) last year! We were in 4A and it was a tough hunt for a lot of people, but we ventured where most wouldn't. That usually seals the deal. If you just want to score a good cow tag, I would recommend 5B South. That unit rocks for both bulls and cows. I'm not a "seasoned" Elk hunter since I've only been hunting them for two, going on three years, but I've been blessed filling the freezer with the ladies! One cow 4B(difficult hunt), 5B South (Gravy Hunt), and my boy's cow in 4A(not as tough as 4B). We had a great time in 4A. I introduced him to turkey, white tail/muleys and even a HUGE Black Bear!

I guess as Arizonans, we are blessed as far as hunting goes, but nothing beats the smile on your childs face after their first harvest! I can't wait to take my step son out this fall!

Good luck on the unit you choose. I hope you score a tag for your crew!

With 0 points your odds of drawing a NR tag are very very little above 0, as mentioned above in almost every unit NR quotas will be reached before max pnt round of tags is done, thus unless you have enough point to get a max pnts tag you are extremely unlikely to draw. Most likely your unit will have no tags left, if by some slim chance any make it out if you have a partner on the app you are pretty much excluded, and if by some chance 2 tags make it that far even in the worse bow elk units there will be hundreds of guys with points making your odds way way over 100:1, if you even have a chance.

If you are willing to spend the $$$ AND are willing to hunt lessor units (still good) and plan to apply for 10 years before you draw, then go for it.

Great hunting but know your odds this year are nill.

Do they list the draw odds for archery cow elk? I can't find it on the website.

Post the link if you can find it.

Go online and checkout the "REGS",the last few pages should show the "ODDS".In last years,REGS, this was on page 78 0f 80.A unit like 7-E anterless archery elk was 100% in "05" to draw.A 1st choice should be used here,if serious about drawing a cow tag ---

LAST EDITED ON May-12-06 AT 06:03PM (MST)[p]We have 2005 Anterless odds on our website. Along with 3 year data for regular hunts.

Any of the northern units or along the new mexico border are favorites. Anyone that tells you to hold out for a 400 class bull is full of !@$#. If you draw a tag you will quickly find just about every camp knows where there are 2 or 3 400" bulls.

Not saying you wont find them, but if your passing up 360 class bulls your either full of it or not killing anything.

AZG&F is the downfall of hunting in Arizona!!!!!

JOHNSWA-YOU ROCK!!!
MY SONS FIRST ELK WAS A COW (AGE11) AND HIS LAST YEARS WAS A CALF (AGE18) 245 YARD SHOT!! AND YOU COULD NOT HAVE SLAPPED THE HAPPY OFF HIS FACE EITHER TIME! I DREW A UNIT 9 ARCHERY BULL TAG IN 05 AS A RESIDENT WITH ONLY 5BPS (TALK ABOUT LUCKY)I TOOK A 340 GROSS BULL-THAT PEOPLE WERE CALLING A DINK? I THINK EVERYONE WHOS SAYS THEY PASS UP 380+BULLS OR CLAIM THEY SEE THEM EVERYTIME THEY GO OUT. NEEDS TO GET THEIR NOSE OUT OF THE ELK URINE BOTTLE AND COME BACK TO EARTH.THERE ARE VERY FEW GUYS IN THIS STATE THAT CAN PUT UP BULLS OF THAT CALIBER ON A REGULAR BASIS.YOU COULD COUNT THE NUMBER OF 400" BULLS IN THIS STATE ON 1 HAND.IT'S SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT THE "HUNT" TIME SPENT ENJOYING CREATION- INTRODUCING NEW PEOPLE TO HUNTING WITHOUT THE ADDED PRESURE OF HAVING TO KILL THE "WORLDS RECORD" EVERYTIME OUT.OR MAKING THEM FEEL "LESSER" BEACAUSE THEY SHOT A 300" BULL OR, A COW OR CALF.I ADMIRE THE GUYS WHO ONLY HUNT 370-400" BULLS BUT THATS A WHOLE OTHER WORLD.COW HUNTS ARE JUST AS HEART PUMPING AS BULL HUNTS AND NOT EVEN CLOSE TO AS HARD TO COME BY IN AZ.MY FIRST CHOICE THIS YEAR IS A COW HUNT.(MY WIFE LOVES A FULL FREZZER OF ELK MEAT)HER FIRST HUNT EVER WAS A COW HUNT IN 03 AND SHE IS HOOKED!!
JUST MY 2 OR SO CENTS.
GOOD LUCK ON THE DRAW

AMEN BRO!!!
READ MY POST TO SREMIM BELOW.I SPEND COUNTLESS HOURS SCOUTING AND,I LIVE RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF BIG BULL COUNTRY AND HAVE YET TO SEE THE "ALL TO COMMON" 380-400+ bull.I GOT WAY LUCKY IN '05 AND DREW AN ARCHERY UNIT 9 BULL TAG.THE BEST I COULD COME UP WITH WAS A FEW MID 360S TYPE BULLS.WHICH ARE HUGE!! I WOUND UP SHOOTING A 340" BULL WHICH SOME PEOPLE WERE CALLING A "DINK"? MOST PEOPLE ARE OFF ON THEIR SCORES BY AN AVERAGE OF 20 INCHES SO.......... I THINK YOUR NOT SUPPOSED TO DRINK THE BOTTLE OF ELK URINE COVER SCENT?
GOOD LUCK ON THE DRAW!!!!

I havn't been on the site for some time thought I'd cruise on in for a bit tonight since I have nothing better to do.
Average Joe you r right on the money.
I have the wonderful opportunity to go elk hunting every year here in AZ, whether I pull the trigger or the bow string or not. Every unit in this state that has a herd of elk running through it can produce 300 + bulls. To me a mature 6 with 300 inches of antler is a great animal./ Might not be every ones cup of tea, I like biguns too but lets' call it what it is and that is hunting. If you can go out and call in a bull or make a stalk on a herd bull and take him by god that is awesome!
I have seen "2" bulls that would go close to 400 or at least I thought were 400 one we got on film and I breath funny every time I see it. They are not under every bush and jack pine out here, but I still believe we are the crown jewel for Big Bulls.
My wife missed two bulls last year on her first rifle hunt in the Nov season, she got greedy but thats another story. Even though she missed, my eldest daughter, my wife and I had the time of our lives it was great and to me that's what it is all about. I kinda stepped out of the picture for a bit because I get kinda down because I think alot of us forget what it is we are really out there searching for. Anyways long winded I know. Hey Allen wassup.hope you get your tag.
JD

JD,
NOT LONG WINDED AT ALL!HERE'S A QUOTE I HAVE IN MY OFFICE "SOME PEOPLE GO ELK HUNTING ALL THEIR LIVES AND NEVER REALIZE IT'S NOT THE ELK THEY ARE AFTER" OH DON'T GET ME WRONG LIKE I SAID I HAD SEEN A FEW 360ISH STUDS THAT I WOULD GLADLY ARROWED IF THEY HAD PRESENTED A SHOT.BUT YOU ARE RIGHT ON ABOUT 300"OF ANTLER.MY WIFE FILMED MY HUNT RIGHT BESIDE ME AND MY BEST BUDDY GOT TO RUN AROUND 9 FOR THE FIRST TIME. AWESOME!!!!EVERY YEAR I ASK MYSELF THESE SIMPLE QUESTIONS "WHY DO I AND WHY DID I START HUNTING???HELPS ME PUT IT IN PERSPECTIVE.
HOPE YOU DRAW WELL!!!!!

AVERAGE JOE

JD,

Good to see you on the sight. I'll send a PM.

Last year, I was fortunate enough to finally get an archery tag, hey it only took 10 years. I was in bow range of a 370 and a 360 class bull but the trees wouldn't get out of my way. I had the chance to let an arrow fly at 320 class bull, but with 3 days left in the hunt and thoughts of the two bigger bulls, I didn't send the arrow. I ended up eating my tag so now I really wished I'd put that 320 bull down. Oh well, hopefully it wont take 10 more years to draw. Even though I didn't fill my tag, it was the funnest two weeks of hunting I have ever done and I hope to do it again real soon.

As for big bulls, I've seen a few, never a 400 with my own eyes, but a buddy of mine showed me a video of a bull from last year that will go every bit over 400. We will try to find him again this year.

Good luck to you all in the draw.

JD, nice to see you here. As to 400" bulls, I got to look at one over 400" and a 396" both killed two years ago in Duwane Adams camp. There out there, but you need to work hard getting to them. Hopefully the draw gods give me a tag this year and Bugler can guide me...........LOL....... Thanks, Allen Taylor......

Hard to make a bad choice, but my 2 cents for someone with out bonus points would be 6a first choice, then one of the 5 units second. These are good units with lots of potential and lots of elk.
