First scouting trip of the year

Well, just couldn't stand it anymore. I had to go up to my stomping grounds and to have a look around. It was worth the gas money. I saw hundreds of elk. Saw one spike still wearing his headgear. Unreal. Also, got snowed on. I went to one spot where I shot my elk last year and had two yearlings walk up to about 40-50 yards until they saw me standing there. When they turned to retreat I pulled out my turkey call and let out a bunch of quick lonely hen calls and they stopped in their tracks, turned around, and came right back to me. I thought that was pretty cool. They came to 25 yards and stopped, but I kept hearing hoove -steps. I looked right behind me and uphill and there was another yearling standing on top of a rock right above me. I could have hit her with a fishing rod. She just stood there with the sun in her eyes looking everywhere for that sound. Very cool morning. Not the last time I will try that trick. I guess it must have sounded like a calf or something to them. Anybody ever done that or heard of a similar experience?

man trey, you are killin me! I hate sitting here in Ohio looking at my aerial photos, IT DOES NOT CUT IT. I cannot wait to be back in the moutains, cannot wait. less then 4 months........

Good job getting out, find some good spots and poke another bull, if you fail to draw are you going to hunt? You can always get LO tags, pricey but so is going out of state to hunt! Most res balk at the price, then turn around and drive to CO and OTC, when all is said and done it costs the same and you get to hunt closer to home and a better area. Keep it in mind.

I am shopping for a 3 man tent this year, getting my spike camp ready!

Sister left for AK today, gggrrrr, she travels all over and I sit at a desk, and I have a bigger 401k for when I am to old to care, I envy her.

Give me a call one evening and we can BS, I hope you got a point in WY, can get a GREAT tag there in 3-4 years for sure if you did, 6 weeks hunting rifle & bow on 1 tag!

Hey Don V

Don-
I knew you'd read this post! Yep, it's nice to to be able to go up on a whim. It's still alot more in gas this year, so I won't be going up as much as last year ( yeah right). It is cool being up there when noone else is around. Didn't see a soul. Those elk know it too... running down the road in front of my truck. The drought here doesn't seem quite as bad up there. There was still snow in places. I applied for deer in that unit also, so I'm really trying to figure out where they hang out. Saw about twenty deer and had three little bucks walk past in bow range. If I don't draw, I'll be looking for a LO tag. Don't you get one every year as a backup? If so, let me know if you get drawn and want to sell it. I guess, at the very least, I'll get a LO cow tag and go on a meat hunt. I would probably try to do that with a bow. Unfortunately, my camera batteries were bad, so no pics. Next time I'll send ya some to keep the blood pumping. Good thinking on the spike camp. This year I'm hiking in and staying in. It sure is nice glassing elk from your sleeping bag. I didn't apply in other states this year. Next year I'll have it a little more together and start playing the game. Now I know why everyone does that. Gotta hunt- can't rely on getting drawn here every year. Good luck with the aerials....hehe

RE: Hey Don V

I got my LO already (just in case) cheapier now, they are pricey, FYI gun are $500 more then bow, maybe more, so keep that in mind. I still like where you got your bull - always see elk there, I found a nice clearcut I liked, jumped one elk, might be worth checking - email me and I can send GPS coord.

Trey, thats a cool story. Thanks for sharing. I'll be going out looking were I hunt in about three weeks and hopefully I can get some pictures of a few bulls in the velvet with my new camera to share.

Man, you guys are killing me. The places that I hunt still are under about 3 feet of snow.

BT-
you should be glad that you have 3' of snow. We got dust and more dust. Its a dry one here New Mexico. Hoping there is enough moisture for elk to even grow antlers this year. Could be a good jackalope season though!

Outtabreath Ive been going up to my cabin the last three weeks in a row.Ive found five sheds so far. Also pulled out an 18" brown trout in my backyard .To bad they went to a level 2 fire restriction. Also going up next weekend and memorial.good luck in the draw. crazeymaez in unit 52

Hey crazymaez-
Where's your cabin? You lucky dog. I would love to have a little chunk of land and a cabin up there. I'll be heading up there next Saturday. Got caught up in the home projects this weekend, but my mind was in 52. Do you ever get LO tags for 52? If I don't get drawn, I'll probably be looking for a cow tag. Any leads?
What a nice rain we got last night. That should help things a bit.

Crazymaes,

is your cabin on locked gate on end of Los pinos river? do u know any Andrew Gallegos?? or is that on other location of the river?

Outta, i didn't go to unit 52 past weekend. i went san juan river instead! what a blast! but i need to go to unit 52! soon!! i know some who sells cow tag if u want one! for unit 52.
