come on guys some one help me ive heard good things on this unit. Send me in the right direction. Let me know what how you feel about this unit. is this unit over crowded? Are there plenty of bulls to harvest? Something please

In reagrd to GMU 62; it is a big unit with ALOT of hunting pressure reagrdless of season. 1st season seems to be the best for overall harvest, IF you are planning on getting off the roads, via foot or horseback, and plan to get deep into the canyons in the northwestern part of the unit. The herd in both 61/62 is estimated at almost 9000 head, but there was a poor harvest ratio in GMU 62 last year (19% success/hunter). I have hunted both units a few seasons (both archery & rifle) and if you have a cow tag you can easily fill it. Filling a bull tag in 62 will be more difficult and you will have to work a little harder to fill it, but it can be done. Because 61 is considered a "trophy" draw unit many hunters feel that by hunting "next door" they are able to harvest bigger, more mature animals, which is certainly NOT the case, unless you have access to private land! If I were you I wouldn't even bother with hunting unit 61 or 62, realistically, I'd hunt in unit 66, just south of Gunnison on the way to Montrose. If I was in your situation, that is exactly where I'd go and for many obvious reasons. Check the harvest stats vs hunter numbers. Not too terribly tough to get into and an area that has some world class animals waiting to be popped. Pending your point numbers and your desire to get away from people, I'd opt to hunt in a wilderness area where hunter traffic is by foot or horseback only. Without burning points, I'd check into unit 371 or even 65 right outside of Ridgeway. There is some down right beautiful country that harbors some world class hunting in traditionally great deer and elk country. I hope this helps.

I've hunted there for 5 years. There are lots of animals but also lots of people. Most times when you ask about this unit, you will be pointed to the Rubideu (sp) Basin. There are tons of animals, hunters and rough country. I've also heard that Fence Line Road is a good area.

We've hunted there enough that we have found our own little hole that has produced for us (4 of us). It's like any other Elk area in that the more you hunt the area the more you learn where NOT to hunt. We walk into areas that require we haul our Elk out on our backs, but we get away from other hunters by doing so.

If you hunt hard and are willing to walk, you can be successful. Good luck with your hunt.

blackbass, You can go to the Colorado DOW web site and get the info. On the left side of the Home page you will see a link to Statistics (sp). Just click that and you will find all the stats you can read in a week. Good luck.

I find it to be an easy unit to hunt, one, because there are a ton of elk in 62 and two, with all of the hunters you just have to pick a spot and wait and they will get driven to you eventually. Seems like there are more elk in the pinions and cedars then up high. Good luck.
