Just wondering what others may have to say. The Archery season has been moved forward to start on Sept. 22nd, which I feel is good because they will be rutting from beginning to end-BUT- Do you think it will be harder to call a herd bull into range, since he may already have been going for possibly a week or more?

I was wondering the same thing.I agree it may be tough to call the herd bull in he will be with his cows and may just gather and go everytime he hears your calls. It may depend on how much you call knowing what to use and when to use your calls ect..
I guess we will find out Sept-22.

The smaller bulls might be just as likely to come in, but the big bulls antlers might be more busted up as well, especially in areas that have a large bull/cow ratio.

Should be alot of bugling going on, so you should be able to work around and get in front of the herd.I have the same area as last year, but this year I have a bull tag!

We had these later hunt dates back in 98. Little brothers 9 hunt dates ran into early oct.Early in the hunt, The herd bulls were frantic trying to hang on to all thier cows. We got in middle of a herd bull with a band of cows and a satalite bull trying to steal those cows. A well timed cow call brought the 381 gross bull back to gather in a stray. Little bother made a pretty 40 yard shot and the hunt ended on the second day. Should be an awesome hunt for you lucky sob's.

Craig I already told you that Yes it will make it a little more difficult, but with a litte suductive sweeeeeeet talk I'll have one sitting in your lap,,,,TOP PIN

Eric, Top Pin huh, I guess I'll have no excuse this year. Can't wait-I'm looking forward to scouting this weekend...

There are a lot of what ifs for this hunt. One thing you got on your side in a new moon. But what is the weather going to be like? It would be great if we got a 10 degree drop in temp right before the hunt.

I think Warbird is right in saying you need to be able to use the right call at the right time in the right situation. You need to be able to react to the bulls moods and how heavy they are rutting.

Another thing you need to take in account is the bull to cow ratio in the unit you are hunting. You could be hunting 5BN and find a herd bull with 40 cows and not be able to draw him away. Or you could be in 10 and have a massive bull fighting to keep 3 cows. When there are bulls fighting over so few cows you can make a lot happen. Just got know what to do for the situation you might be in. It will be interesting to see what happens, because there are still a lot of unknowns....
