Elk behavior question? Direction of escape from threat?

When elk are spooked off a tank or out of a feeding area, in your experience do they generally flee toward the direction they entered the area from?

I've got a tank I often see elk depart in 3 distinct directions when disturbed, one of which is a known bedding area, the other two areas unknown as of yet. I've scouted the areas surrounding, but have not sat on the tank to watch exactly where they come in from. I usually see the elk there when I'm driving back to camp after dark from scouting or hunting another area. Some of the elk go so far as to run hard to get in front of me to get to the other side they seem determined to get to.

So, I'm curious what others have experienced with this.

Possibly, that's just my analytical nature showing through, but I am looking for some clues as to if a few areas will be worth scouting or not since I have to travel in from out of state and will have limited scouting time. Just trying to formulate a plan of action ahead of time of what will be good areas to scout and won't leave me chasing "ghosts".
