Close Encounters, of the Wapiti kind

Ive been reading some accounts of people having some really close encounters with Cervus elaphus and decided to share my own encounter from the night of September 6th. I guess I should start at the beginning though.......
There is a patch of public ground that im pretty familiar with that is surrounded by a large ranch. A public road crosses the corner of the public ground at its highest point, meaning that any hunting to be down here could result in a long pack back up the very rugged mountain. To top it off, there is a very healthy local population of rattlesnakes that call this place home. I begain hunting this place during the 900 series archery only season August 15th. The antelope were not fooled by my novice attempts at stalking and decoying them. I did get to know some really nice whitetail bucks that bedded in the rocky junipier choked draws.
So, with the begining of archery season, I decided to focus my attention on chasing the largest of the bucks, a 5 point with a forked back tine not unlike that of a mulie. I named him fork. Me and fork have had numerous encounters, including a shot that I fudged at 40 yards. I begain to feel like Id figured out this old bucks habits enough to lay an ambush. So I hunkered down on the edge of a large grassy opening and waited for the large buck to make his appearance. As the sun begain to dip behind the mountains I begain to think that this trip would be a bust. As begain to think about the long hike back up to my truck I heard the sound of hooves on the parched earth not far away. I watched in surprise as the elk trotted single file in front of me. As the lead cow came towards me I begain to think about my coveted Missouri Breaks elk permit that I was very lucky to draw. Still, the lead cow was 30 yards away, and a raghorn bull not far behind. The cow was walking in a direction that would lead her downwind of me and the game would be done for sure. Then unexpectedly she changed course, walking directly towards me! I mentally counted down the yards as she angled closer and closer, 25, 20, 15, 10 , 5! I though for sure she would catch my scent and blow outa there at any time! Imagine my surprise and fear as she stood right beside my cowering form and commenced to sniffing the back of my hooded neck! She then NUZZLED ME! Dumbfounded I turned my head and looked straight into her eyes. Our eyes met and hers got as big as saucers. She bolted and stopped about 15 yards away and looked back at me, giving me a perfect broadside shot. I dont see how anyone could have shot in my possition though. I kinda felt indebted to her for not stomping the crap outa me. As the days last light began to fade, I heard the sound of an uneasy elk herd and overzealous young bull fade into the distance.
So.......how close has everyone gotten to a wild elk?

ONE OF THE BIGGEST THRILLS OF MY HUNTING ADVENTURES WAS GETTING WITHIN 2.0 FEET OF A BIG 6X6 BULL IN WYOMING. CALLED THE BULL RIGHT IN AND HE JUST KEPT COMMING, AT 2 FEET HE FINALLY SMELLED ME AND WENT BALLISTIC. I WAS REALLY CLOSE TO HIM WHEN I BUGLED AND HE CAME IN FAST, WHEN HE JUMPED HE KICKED A BUNCH OF ROCKS/STICKS ALL OVER ME. HE THEN BARKED 3-4 TIMES AND LEFT TO FIND HIS GIRLS. I WAS HOOKED ON ELK FOREVER MORE, I HAVE YET TO TOUCH ONE AS SOME PEOPLE HAVE. A BIG BULL AT THAT DISTANCE WILL GET SCARY. ....YD.

3ft 8 days ago. I actually shot over a calf at 4ft to hit the cow I was aiming for. I had probably 10 elk within 20ft for 2 or 3 minutes until I felt I could draw without spooking them. It was crazy

LAST EDITED ON Sep-08-06 AT 11:53AM (MST)[p]a few days into the season I crept within a 150 yards or so of a herd of 30 elk.

Then some cows broke away and came walking right towards me. All i could do was hide in a dry creek bed. The 4 cows walked by me at 6 yards or so but I couldn't draw. Ended up with no shot.

about 10 yards for me, a five point bull in the rut, that was close enough for me! my brother takes care of JR. at the willow park zoo, all i can say is it's a good thing wild elk fear us cause they could throw us around like rag dolls if they wanted!one year they had to saw off JR's antlers becaus he killed a cow,my brother said he gored her, picked her up off the ground an was tossing her around!

LAST EDITED ON Sep-08-06 AT 01:14PM (MST)[p]The closest I got was a couple of years ago in Idaho. We weren't trying to be quite by any means just looking at country a couple weeks before season. I was walking up a small hill and as I circled around some brush a spike stood up 10 feet away from me. I froze and moved my eyes to the ground. We must have stood there for 15 minutes before he decided I wasn't a threat and started feeding next to me. Took him 10 minutes to work his way over the lip of the hill we were on.

Hold on I forgot about boyscout camp. When I was 10? I heard something outside my tent around dawn. Opened the fly and poked my head out only to have a cow with a calf blow snot in my face. I'm talking 12 inches tops.

On the last day of an archery deer hunt a couple years ago I was sick of seeing no bucks so I decided to follow a big herd of elk into the timber just for fun. I was on the trail they had used to file into the woods when I noticed an elk right in front of me. I figured I was right on his tail. Next thing I know he's headed right towards me. So when he heard some cow calls behind him he looked back and while his head was turned I laid down right next to the trail we were both on. It was a spike bull and he came within inches of me. All I could see was hooves cause I could not move my head to look up at him. I think he actually leaned down to snif me. It scared the shiz out of me and I thought he was gonna stomp me to death or something. Anyways he ran up the hill a bit and I just remember thinking to myself, "man I could have crabbed his leg" Fun stories thanks for the post!

Wow! that would be cool. I haven't had one 'nuzzly' me, but have had cows and calves at 3 or 4 yards several times and a real nice 6 point bull at about 6 feet one time. He was wild, but was in a coveted permit area, so not as wild as some!

Thanks for the story...making my wait till the breaks really long!!!

(ps...I'll have to run up the hill in the morn to see "how close" I can get!!)

A few years ago while elk hunting, I had a bull talking to me at 50yards when another 6 point came up behind me. When i looked over my shoulder all i could see was his knees and neck. I thought man he is gonna hook me. About that time he bugled at the other bull...I thought my ears would bust. after a few minutes he walked off and just stared at me. the worst part of this day was both bulls where within bow range, but it was a spike only area. never did see a spike on that hunt.

called in a cow and calf one time, I was lying in a ditch looking up at her chest. Man was I happy when they decided to sidestep me instead of step on me.

I was videoing a large herd of elk and a couple of bulls doing the parade thing and calling a little. I heard something step behind me and figured it was a friend who had been with me earlier. I kept videoing and heard a sniff, so turned to look over my shoulder and there was a 5-point bull reaching down to sniff me. Don't know who was surprised the most, but I'm sure I had more stuff in my shorts than he did!!
