First Bull Taken by Jae Pregill. After four years of working the hills...his passion took a new turn for the better. Jae Successfully took a beautiful 6x6 Bull. This boy threw everything at Jae. He gave the show we all hope for.... a screaming bugling bull that was somewhat upset and so pissed off at our "Cow & Calf Calls" that he had little time to think about the arrow that passed threw him at 35 yards. Confused to the sound and sudden impact... He ran off to take a nap.

Jae being so excited.... jumped up and down several time the moment he saw his first blood, that he had a fat lip from his binoculars hitting him in the lip everytime he bounced.

Tactics used...
Bugle to locate... cow calls to talk to him...wind indicator to flank him.... we moved around to the opposite side of him... even though the wind was favorable. Our move kept him from the old standard hang up... He double back to intercept us. I was 75-100 yard behind Jae calling... He responded to everything we did... unlike most times in the woods.

From first light we were on a bull. 2000 vertical feet and 4 miles from the truck later... it would have been nice to chase the bull by the truck. However, Grass is greener on the other side of the Mountain... besides we came to bivy hunt!

Wasted...Bivy Nap we had just missed a good 5x5 that got away... which was just fine... this was the furtherst from any vechicle.

Beautiful Elk Habitat. Do not try and hunt this area unless you've been a hurdler in Track... TONS of DEAD FALL and Bushwacking!

filtering was a must... tons of water everywhere.

GPS in first access country was another must. Along with a good Topo map. Very easy to get disoriented. Another lesson... Always carry your pack. Never think you'll come back... Going light without essentials is hazardous. We saved many a trips choosing to take our whole packs instead of shedding our heavy 50-60 lbs packs. We planned for 3 days out.

I carried a CanonGL2 Digital Camera hoping to get footage of taking a bull. But... Sometimes you have to do what you got to do to get the bull to come in... Three people would be the ideal number for hunting a bull with camera... but we were only two.. So no kill shots... only point a shoot. We knew we were close as the bull started to lean on the pines.....

BULL DOWN... Funny thing was we talked to an outfitter that said... "he had 22 clients last year. None were bigger than this one, as only 5 of his clients filled their tags. The Area apparently has been managed by the ID Fish and Game as a meat unit... Tons of cow tags are available... depleating the elk." We were very impressed by what we had heard, helping us appreciate this bull even more.

Jae Pregill First Bull taken with Archery
Jae devotes any spare time to scouting.. He had made several trips to the area and talked with Biologist and locals. To them we thank for their insight. Yet, it was Jae's determination to grit this hunt out as a whatever it takes attitude. Jae earned this bull! Having taken my first bull just two years earlier, I couldn't have been more excited. Everyone deserves to take a bull...until then get working and get out in the hills.

IDAHO treated us well. One more tag to fill.Jaes also bought a MT tag... So we could hunt both side of the divide.

We had Money to pay an outfitter... But decided we'd carry it out and use our money on the next bull as we realized we had an access road 3/10th of a mile uphill. We spent all day skinning, quartering, and hauling that bull out. We took out the entire hide to the knees. Crazy, but this was the first bull and now Jae had options to do some fun stuff with his hide. It was like carrying a five gallon bucket of cement up the hill.... I had this stupid task. But happy to help Jae. As you can tell the work stir up a sweat. We make four trips.
After the fourth and final trip we still had our truck parked four miles away. We then began the bushwacking marathon-sprint. We took fanny-packs, water and took off. 2hrs later we reached the trucks. Loaded up in 5 minutes and drove around 12 miles to reach our meat. Not to mention one flat tire and a broken jack later.

The next day $900 tires were bought as we dropped off the meat and visited the taxidermist.

Way cool, and nice bull. Thanks for sharing the story and pics. I'm sure you guy's will never forget this hunting trip.

You gotta love it when a plan comes together like that!
Congrats on a beautiful bull. and some super memories..

That is one fantastic bull! Congratulations. I have hunted elk the "normal" way for years, taking up the wall tent and stove and stuff like that. However, you have just insipred me to do a hunt that I have only thought about doing.

Job well done.

Fantastic!! Great job on the bivy hunt!! Looks like tons of fun, and a very good looking Bull also.....

Ahh! To be young and have energy!

Very nice bull and a great picture story! I am getting a great respect for those who tackle this stuff with a bow.

Very nice bull! Congrats.

I found out too this season that it's about impossible to both try to archery hunt and film at the same time unless in a tree stand or blind...my GL1 was more, than less, dead weight in my pack this past archery season.

Nice pics and story!

Some goals in life put a damper on the hunting time. Pics and stories like this don't help any either gary :(

I'll talk to you when I get back from China if you haven't killed one yet.

Cheers,
Pete

Nice bull, nice pics.
What backpack were you using? How many cubic inches is it and how did they perform?

Great story and pictures in sequence and then the big bull down for the count. Congrats to you and your hunting buddy.

Other crap in fanny pack. My fanny pack is ready to go alone. Water bottle, knife, sharpener, nonbattery flash light (squeeze it), back up release, GPS, compass, matches, Bone&Wood Saw, twine, reflective tacks, orange ribbon, batteries for GPS, Extra Tape for Camera, Space blanket.

This space blanket saved me when I hiked up for a quick drag out of Jae Buck in 2004. We decided to spend the night and all I had was canavass game bags and a space blanket. It saved my bacon. It was very cold that night.

UT DIY General Season 2004 LONGBOW.

GOOD LUCK... BE SAFE, Have a great bowhunt.

HAVE ANY OF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE BETWEEN A BULL OR A BUCK?

I have had this happend to me twice in the same week. Once while I was making a stalk on a nice bull, we saw a buck between us and the bull... so we started with the buck... We got within 60 yard, no shot, and three deer ran off. I assumed the buck was with them... walking later, we busted the buck. He hadn't rand off. We missed the bull too.

Tonight, I was back in UT and same thing... spotted a nice buck, was putting the sneak on him...closing within 80 yards and a bull bugles in the ravine below me... UT Front general season, is not know for many bulls... you try and take any you come across, yet the bucks in this area are too good to pass up either.

What would you go after if you had both at the same time? I confess, I was dreaming of shooting one, then calling in the other.

I'm sure there are some same day kills out there.... Anyone????

Nice bull. I think too many people hire guides to do all the work and don't do it themselves. It makes the hunt a lot more meaningful when you do it yourselves. Nothing against guides, but I think they are making hunting a rich mans sport. Where are the days of doing all the hard work yourselves. Like I said, I have nothing against guides, but some of the guides in the area I hunt are big @##es. I don't want to take away from your success, or your hunt so nice job on a well deserved bull.

you fellers certainly earned your meat, memories and antlers...nice to see work ethic resulting in backstraps and horns for the family wall...congratulations...inspirational...

That in my opinion is the coolest hunt. Nothing beats light gear, packing in and shooting an awesome bull with a bow. I dream of a hunt like that. I envy everyone who doesnt live in WA. Perfect.

Congratulations! What a great way for a hunt to happen, you earned it every step of the way. That is exactly what I would like to do and stories like this fuel the fire. It's not going to be "next year" forever. Thanks for the story and the inspiration.

Mike

Congrats on your success and you did it the hard way! Thanks for the great story and the pics and Enjoy!!

What an inspiring story and I loved the pics that accompanied every detail! You guys are clearly a class act and definitely ambassadors of our sport and way of life! Kudos to the both of you!!

Not to be discouraged... I'm still on a high from '04.

I'm just trying to get over my luck... back in '04. He's been a great buck taken in my home turf.... Utah. DIY General Tag too.

Since then I've had great pleasure helping others fill their tags...Brother in law.. AZ 6x5 '05

Father in laws bull... first too. Both side of family have taken up the bow.

A Buck that got shot by Bill Allard's camera.... I owe all my bowhunting savy to this guy. He as become a great friend and "GodFather" to me as a bowhunter. I definitely have a mentor to follow. I'm an eager learner and student, soaking up all his years of experience and wisdom like a sponge.

A bull also shot by Bill Allard. One close encounter in a treestand above the wallow... What an experience.

I hope to show more in '06... stay tuned.
