Montana Elk Hunt, First year and a dream hunt in near future

My buddy and i are heading over to montana this year, We got drawn on our second attempt. We are pumped. We got the combo. Anyone have any info on where to start for the elk for a general rifle tag. Where we want to hunt deer they do not allow elks hunts unless you get drawn for that area, i wish.lol. This is actually my first post and would love some info to the right direction. Not gps info if you know what i mean. Thanks fellow hunters

When are you planning to hunt?

I am planning a 3 dayer the beginning of the season for a trial in an elk area yet planned. but my main hunt im taking off nov 9 or 10 for 10 to 12 days.

If we dont do any good in the 3 dayer trip we will combine our 10 to 12 day hunt deer then elk for the nov 9 or 10 to start our 10 day hunt

Based upon the dates your best chances will probably be on the opener trip (unless there is an early winter). There will be a lot of competition on the public land. If you can find a cheap guide or access to private land it will increase your chances dramatically.

Early in the season I have hunted the public land around White Sulpher Springs, MT. Much of the private land is hunted so the elk get kicked around especially early in the season. Also, there are some big bulls and in general a lot of elk.
