Passing on 390 bulls

Just talked to a friend guide on a hunt. Called me from the Mountain. He said they passed on a couple 390's looking for 400 class. You might say the Altamainian Pisscuttin B!tch will be happy to know it is in his favorite neck of the woods. So when he draws next year a monster waits him. They did get them on Video. Who would pass on a 390?
The merit of a bull with a price on his head. Great bulls get to live!! Most of you will get to see it.
Carry on

>the only people who pass a

>390 looks like.

Kinda what I was thinking. We better take a look at those pics?? However, I did get a laugh at the cat's new nickname...

Probably not many hunters could even tell the difference. If you are not shooting at those you must be afraid of blood or something. If I saw one of those I'd jump on his back with a rock in one hand and a knife in the other. on second thought...never bring a rock to an antler fight . or something like that. LOL.

A guy passed up a 390 bull huh?

Well, I guess you got your Darwin award winner for next year.

Or what does the one dude say, "Here's your sign."

320 bulls always look like 390's through beer goggles.

Tell your buddy to sober up, get outta camp and wack the first 340 bull he has a chance at.

And remind me sometime to tell you my lantern story, since we're tellin' stories. :)

I dont believe 10 inces on a bull can be determined. Think about it! 1/2 inch on every measurement and you could have your 10 inches making what you thought was a 390 bull a 400 bull or it could swing in the other direction and be a 380 bull.Big is Big!!! Before wildlife managers started managing for trophy bulls a 300 inch bull was considered to be a big bull. I guess not any more. The day I pass a 390 bull will be the day I quit hunting.

Mike has it right....Although there probably is a few guys around that can tell the difference, but these are guys that do it for a living, they do nothing but field judge animals EVERY DAY from june until they drop, then they get hte sheds and confirm their guesses. So when Joe Average hunter says 390, it could be anywhere from 320-450....

You might say the guy doing the shooting has killed more then his share of 380 - 390 and these guides can make the call. They prove it year after year.

There is some teeth to this statement as I know some of the guys who come out year after year, set their goals and then live with their choices. Some of these guys have killed lots of bulls and with the right guides can determine the score and make their choice.
I don't think the average joe who goes out and watches bulls for a few weeks every year can make the same kind of judgement
as though guys who do every day all year long.
If the average joe passes a 390 bull, it is their loss.
Man, give me a good looking mature bull and get out of my way!!!

LAST EDITED ON Sep-22-06 AT 02:37PM (MST)[p]I was with a friend this weekend who (despite our recommendations) passed on a 380 typical then a 390 non-typical. It was his first elk hunter ever, only had three days to hunt, and eventually went home with a 340. Beyond foolish.

WELL!!!

IF IT AIN'T PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT ME WHILE I'M AT WORK AGAIN!!!

I GET OFF A LITTLE EARLY TODAY,COME HOME TO CHECK THE BIG STINKY BULL SECTION OUT BEFORE I HEAD UP ON THE MOUNTAIN ONLY TO FIND ONE OF MY FRIENDS CALLING ME NAMES AGAIN!!!

ALTAMAINIAN PISSCUTTIN BITTCH HUH???

THE ONLY bobcat WITH MORE NAMES THAN I CAN REMEMBER!!!

But all of them earned, Just for you B,
Passing a 390 bull is one in thousand type guy, but you can rest assured he's the same guy who will post a picture of a 400 class bull 3 out of 5 years he hunts, sometime you just eat tag soup it don't put on much weight.

I have seen many bulls in the wild as most of us have ,until they are on the ground with a tape on the horns, have I ever been able to tell a 400 from a 390 ,

Just messing with ya Bessy!! Good luck on your trip hope ya find a monster bull and hope ya draw the tag in 07. If you are hunting S slope I know where there are three bulls 1-6x6 give me a call!! They need you.

I BELIEVE THE BULL IS ABOUT(BANG!!!) 350"+,OOPS I JUST SCREWED UP,THE BULL AIN'T 400"+ & I DON'T MAKE THE MAGAZINES,BFD!!!

THESE BOYS THAT CLAIM IT WAS THEIR FIRST ELK HUNT & PASS ON 380"+ BULLS OUGHT TO HAVE THEIR ASSES KICKED!!!

I'LL BET IF THEY DIDN'T HAVE HIGH DOLLAR GUIDES,OUTFITTERS & FINDERS THEY'D CHANGE THEIR TUNE!!!

THE ONLY bobcat THINKING WHEN BULLS THAT BIG ARE CONSIDERED SMALL PISSCUTTERS I'M GONNA BE KNOWN AS THE ALTAMAINIAN PISSCUTTIN BITTCH,WAIT A MINUTE I ALREADY AM!!!

I agree with the other guys on telling the difference between a 390 and 400 bull, that is a tough task. Can the difference be made, yes, but that is tough. You could miss that on mass measurements and 2 of the tines. But if you set your magic mark at 400 and are willing to have all your sleepless nights when you eat tag soup then go ahead.

That's why you just need a 410+ step out so there is no question :7 WhenI finally pull my tag for the unit I've been holding out for I would sure love a 400 bull, but I know I wouldn't pass up on a 390 bull. I think I would never sleep again if I ate that tag after passing a 390 bull. But I wonder if I would think different if I already had a 390 bull hanging on my wall?????????

no such thing as any guide passing 390 even those mullet toten rednecks from mossback wouldn't pass that up

I'm sorry but these fellers are full of crap. Plain and simple. They may be seeing some good 340 or 350 bulls and calling them 390 and passing on them - but they probably haven't even seen one over 370. People exaggerate too much.

VERY well put Mike- People forget that a 300+ bull is still BIG. I'm not doubting the poster (speaking in general)- but most people have never seen a 400 bull, yet 99% of people claim they have. You see it every year- 25+ so called 400's hit the dirt. The dust settles and alot of 340-360 hit the dirt, a few higher and a handful of 400's. It amazes me how many people think they are experts at scoring bulls on the hoof. It humors me really. "My buddy shot a 389 bull". Hits the real tape-- 355. Elk scores are like fish stories. Hard to believe much anymore.

Back to the original posts (sorry for my rant)--
I'm with you- If I ever pass on a 390 class bull, somebody please shoot me. I will have forgotten what it means to hunt.

When I shot my 382" Utah bull if the safety had been on I'd have bent the trigger. passing on 320-350 class bulls wasn't that hard but I can't imagine passing a 370+ bull, I think most only think they passed a 390 bull.

I'm not going to get into whether or not anyone believes the bulls we saw were 380 or 390 or 320 and 330. No doubt when bulls get that big I am no expert. I will say, however, that I killed a bull in Utah in 2003 that officially dried a fuzz under 370. And I would bet my left nut both bulls we found that my buddy passed were easily larger than the one I killed. And my buddy was a complete idiot for not shooting either of them.
