Hayden Greenwood hunted with Sonora Outfitters recently in Mexico and wanted to share his thoughts. He writes,
"I have been fortunate enough to hunt with Sonora Outifiters twice now. After the first hunt we had, I thought we had experienced the peak of Coues deer hunting in Old Mexico, until I went again and had an even better experience!
Cody greeted us at the airport after our quick 50 min flight from Phoenix. He picked us up with cold drinks in hand, and we swiftly headed to his office in downtown Hermosillo. There he prepped us on what we might expect, where we were hunting, and started the paperwork we would need to get our trophies back to the United States.
From the office we headed to the ranch we were hunting which was tucked away behind a locked gate miles from any well established road. We drove through town after town of Old Mexico appreciating the local culture and what life is like for the people who call Sonora home. The drive was quick and safe.
We got to camp, met the camp cook and the guides who would be by our side, working endlessly to locate the famous grey ghosts. We shot the rifles which were waiting for us, both with custom long range turrets and plenty of ammunition and headed out for an evening glass.
We saw 50-100 Coues deer a day, and hunted new areas day after day. On the evening of day 3 we were glassing into a large mountain in the oak trees where I spotted a dark mature coues deer pushing does. It was a half mile away through steep country, and when our guides could have said let's see if he is there tomorrow, they insisted we make a play and hustle to get a shot showing their true dedication to their clients success.
We crossed a ridge where we figured the buck would be, but like they often do, the deer had managed to slip into cover out of sight. We spread out across the ridge and glassed aggressively into the hill side he had been on and 15 minutes later our guide, Fransisco, spotted legs moving through brush a few hundred yards away from where he had been.
I got set up, ranged where he would come out, and as soon as he cleared the trees made a 450 yard shot right thru the lungs and we had a giant coues buck down! We made our way across the canyon, took photos, celebrated and soaked in the experience. Our guides then processed the buck and opted to carry him out on our behalf back to the truck.
We continued hunting with another tag, seeing buck after buck looking for the one that really stood out. We had opportunities to hunt Javelina each night and everyone in our group was able to harvest one.
On the second to last day, overlooking a big flat we found another tall buck with big eye guards. He had long tines, good width, big eye guards, and was everything you look for in a mature coues. We got set up, dialed the gun, and with one shot the buck was dead 615 yards away.
We spent the last day hangin' around camp, enjoying Old Mexico. The guides helped get our capes salted and skulls clean ready to make it through US Customs with ease. We headed back to the office in Hermosillo the last day, where Cody prepared the proper documents for the customs agents to see, bringing our animals back to the US. When we passed thru customs we gave them the folder with the paperwork and proper information and we passed and got the stamp of approval within seconds.
