Broadhead performance

Yesterday I got my first elk with a bow. It was great so much better than with a rifle. I do have a question about the broadhead\arrow performance. My bull was 34 yards quarting away. The arrow went between the ribs through lungs and heart and stopped at the ribs on the other side. The total weight of my arrow and broadhead is 420 grain, arrow speed is 260. I would have guessed that the arrow would have at least passed part way through. Did my arrow perform properly or is there something in my setup that needs adjusting?
Thanks

LAST EDITED ON Sep-22-03 AT 01:30PM (MST)[p]This is perfectly normal for 63 ft/lbs of kinetic energy. Pass throughs on elk are less than 25% of the time I'd guess.

Cheers,
Pete

Pass thru's are nice, but not necessary. You made a good shot and the bull is dead...that's all the matters. Congrats on your bull. Great job...

If it was quartering away it may have hit the opposing shoulder. If an elk is broadside you usually get a passthru. I think it makes the trailing job much better if you do get a pass but it doesn't always happen. I got a 5x5 this year with a quartering to shot and i'm glad I saw where he ran cause he blood wasn't the greatest. Even though U recovered him it made me nervous as h#ll.

I'm with PW. You made a good shot on the bull and he's dead. I shot one in NM with a 92 lb. bow shooting full-length 2317s with 125 gr. Titans (don't shoot THAT rig anymore). Hit him square in the ribs and only 3" or so of the arrow protruded through the off side. Didn't need a blood trail; he only went 70 yards.

Yea, On an elk you won't get pass throughs that often with that shot.
Oh be sure it can and does happen. But once you go through that thick hide / muscle / tissue / fat and then hit the other side you arrow is traveling at about 15-30 % what it was when it entered. Normally it just breaks through the muscle and stops there. Not much you can do about it. I have seen people blow off limbs with guns, shoot through bears. But elk, Just somthin I don't know it's tough.
Congrats on the elk though.
