Management tags anyone?

I have 7 points as a resident and am going to put in for a "management tag " on the monroe. I don't have enough points to draw my muzzy tag and I have never killed an elk. I just want to have the experience of hunting on a good unit and tagging a bull, then I will focus on a monster. With no risk for my points, the only negative is not getting another point if I draw, and that's okay with me. What do you all think about these tags and who else is putting in for them?

Andy

Some photos to think about, both bulls are 5X6 and still alive and kicking on Monroe for the 07 winter hunt.

Don't shoot me I'm still very young.

I am a true MTG bull!

From those pics, I wouldn't touch either of them. Where's the microscope shots to see if there's a 1" point on that left side of that big one somewhere :)

Cheers,
Pete

Think my whole family, aunts, uncles, grandmas, grandpas, nieces and nephews, brothers, sisters, and all the kids are putting in for that hunt...

NOT............

That's what is going to happen if they don't watch what they're doing.... We still need to send the money in with the app's...

Rick, you just apply to your west & I'll do the same.

Any one got a clue how many tags were recommended to be issued ?

I awlays apply to the west.... at least west of somewhere!!!

Can't apply for elk so gotta find somehow to draw a big stinky buck tag...pisscutter style!

Rick,

Try Utah general deer season! I have been hearing reports of some true monsters on these hunts. Better than Colorado!;-)

Can't they make a buck management 5 point or less hunt on the deer premium units? I'd go for that????
I'd take any of those pisscutter 5X's on the Henrys! haha
The general deer season is better than Colorado...
Then we'd better pack up and head to Colorado ktc.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-08-07 AT 07:38PM (MST)[p]Something I don't fully understand is if I enter the draw with 10 points, and I draw a management tag, kill a management bull (5x5), and get my points reinstated, will I have 11 points next year or 10? So what I am asking is do I gain a point this year if I draw?

LAST EDITED ON Jan-08-07 AT 09:50PM (MST)[p]elkantlers,
If you draw and check your bull in you will get your 10 points back but will not have 11 points for the year 2008.You will have 10 points again for the year 2008 but you can apply again no waiting periods on this one.
I also heard that 40% number this will result in over 100 management bull tags.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-09-07 AT 10:19AM (MST)[p]One of the biggest bulls I have ever seen was a massive seven point that was busted off (main beam) behind his g-2 on one side . With this hunt being so late, do they realize that a lot of bulls will be busted up? I assume that a big six with a sheared off (or sawed off?) g-5 would be fair game?

LAST EDITED ON Jan-09-07 AT 12:45PM (MST)[p]There are some drawbacks to this tag ... if you shoot a managment bull you have to show up at DWR office with the bull within 72hrs of the kill... or you will not maintain your points
if you dont shoot a bull you loose your points.. if you shoot a non managment bull you loose your points and the bull... its not as good as it looks...

You are dead on elk_horn. One other comment, if you "shear off or grind off" a point be prepared to lose your points and the bull. I know some think the DWR is full of Utards, but who seriously believes they can't tell the difference between a broken and one ground off?

PRO

elkhorn,

Hardly a drawback when each point costs 5 bucks and a year of time. Oh, you will kill a bull with any effort. It is better than it looks and you know it.;-)

ktc, it ends up being more than a year in time. Look at the number of hunters that will catch/pass you in points, which will make drawing a 'real' tag that much harder, resulting in delaying your drawing of a LE tag.

By you I mean those applying for these tags, as YOU lucky man, drew last year.

I think anyone with 10+ would be crazy to do this since you don't get your point back. Let's face it, if you aren't chasing bonus tags, your odds STINK no matter how many points you have in some of these units. I hear it every year, I have 8 points and I can't draw crap-- but my buddy with 1 point drew- you all know the drill. People forget that even with 8 points, you barely have a better shot than the person with 1, etc. If I had <10 points I might look at it since it's going to be a very long time until you are guaranteed a premo tag.

Kirt, if you dont get a point this year, how much harder will it be to draw a LE tag next year? How many more people have 8 points than 7 points for example? How many years are you adding to your wait for that LE tag?

Andy. Not up on the management tags but I do feel that the experence of hunting and hopefully taking an elk will make you more dangerous when you finally draw that primo tag. Not saying that you couldn't get that experence in another state while you build points. Just saying that everytime I hunt, I learn something even after hunting elk almost every year since "77". The learning curve slows with more experence but your first few elk hunts will be tremendous learning experences.

Pro-

Unit by unit it's really hard to predict. If you look at the units in question, management tags applicants don't "trim down" nice and neat (i.e. 5 with 13 pts, 4 with 12 pts, etc.)

Just glancing at the current bonus point summary/breakdown by points on the UDWR's website, alot of people have more than 10 pts (~6000). Considering how many tags are given out each year (~2000), that is ALOT of people left in the pool. People with 10+ could get set back 2 years, maybe more. People less than 10, who knows, 3-4 years, maybe more? I'm just doing quick calcs on those, but it will set you back a couple I would think.

When you really look at it, that part of not getting the point for the year could really set people back. I guess it really depends on where you are in the mix. The key for me personally is that you still have a chance no matter how many points. If you don't care being part of the lottery for a long time, do it. If you really want to secure a Bonus tag down the line, staw away is my thoughts.
