My buddy drew a tag in unit 7. First time applying in WY so he got lucky. Has anyone hunted this unit before and willing to share any advise. We've heard there's a fair amount of private land access issues. We hope to do some scouting this summer. We're looking for a DIY hunt first but open to looking at all options right now. He probably wouldn't want to spend a lot for an outfitter but also looking for maybe a 330+ bull. Any advise is greatly appreciated.

a lot of private land. watch the game and fish web page and apply for the Duncan hunter management area. there is a fair amount of elk on the ranch and they do a random draw like elk tag and only allow a few people to hunt. but it will give you a good area without every yahoo on the mountain around you.

I have hunted it a couple of time and had good success. I have paid tresspass fees on a couple of ranches with good luck. I have found in that area it does not cost to much to get on some pretty good ground. I think a 310 to 335 bull could be done for sure. If he is a bowhunter he will do great. That place can be very good around the 19 to the 25 of September. If U bow hunt i would look at the Cow Creek Mts. If rifle i might look on trying to get a tresspass fee to find not so presured elk. There is always a chance to shoot even a bigger bull than 330 if U get lucky. I took a 355 bull one year and my uncle took a 380 but both those bulls were treepass fee bulls.

Thanks Moseley! I assume this is a drawing limited to those that have already drawn a tag? Do you know of any limitation of residents vs non-residents as well as size of bulls? We plan on doing lots of homework to find good opportunity for something bigger than average. I appreciate the suggestion!! Doug

What's a ballpark figure for trespass fees you've had to pay as I'm sure he'd be up for a "reasonable" charge. He used to bow hunt but probably would upgrade so we'll have to check into that. We did hear that it's probably better during the bow season. Any rough idea on how far you'd typically be from roads and terrain type relative to whether we'd need to get horses as we usually backpack out the meat as long as it's not significantly far or steep. "Significant" seems to change the older I get!
Thanks a lot for your suggestions! I'm very impressed by how much people share here! Doug

this area is a old private ranch that was purchased by the state of Wyoming and the stipulations from the old owner was to limit the access you cant even go and shoot predators on the ranch. i dont know how many people they let elk hunt but i just applied for there turkey hunting on the area and they are limiting that to 10 hunters. but i bet the chance for a 300 plus is fairly likely for the area if not larger.
