I drew a controlled deer tag for the boise unit #39. the hunt is a rifle hunt mid. August thur September. I've elk hunted this unit in November but never deer. Can anyone provide some helpful information?

My friend drew the same hunt. I have heard that it is a hot hunt and you have to get pretty high to find the deer. I have only been in the unit a few times hunting antelope and I have only seen about 5 deer total...and they were does.....this winter when I drove through there I seen a couple of smaller 4 points but thats it...There are some big bucks out there just look look look! Try the Harris Creek area....you might find some bucks in that country but it is steep. Good Luck!

The sheep mtn. area north of arrowrock has some pigs. I would hunt that area way up high. Or the pilot peak area north of idaho city has some big bucks too. Good luck. The harris creek area is overhunted and i would concentrate on the sheep mtn. area for a real quality buck. Do you have horses or a bike???

I drew that hunt a few years back and after 8 days of hunting I shot the second buck I saw, a 3X3 in full velvet. As stated above the weather can be very hot. The day I shot my buck it was about 100 degrees, but I boned that deer out and packed him to my truck where I cooled the meat in front of the air conditioner. No spoilage at all.
I also hunted that Arrowrock area, just not real high in elevation. That buck was bedded in Chokecherries until almost dark. Good luck.

A good buddy of mine drew that tag in 1999. We have hunted 39 since we were just kids and have shot a lot of nice bucks over the years. However, these bucks have been taken durning the rifle hunt in late October when the bucks start moving a little. We hunted hard for several days in are old areas and only saw a handful of deer (mostly does and a couple of small bucks). We then decided to go up high towards Atlanta and hunt up that way and saw some bigger bucks. Beaware that the heat is a killer...we thought we were going to die a few times. The deer are only out for a short period after sun up and for a while before dark. Good luck...it is some of the prettiest country you will ever lay your eyes on. (Coming from a kid who grew up in those hills :)

Thanks, for the info. I know where Sheep mtn. is but not Arrowrock. We are hunting from horses and planning on getting as high as we can. Hey muledeerhunter1 sounds like you know the Atlanta area well. We hunted elk there and love the area. We hunt very hard and most often go where nobody else will. We were looking hard at the Queens River area and hunting back in the Wilderness on horses. Is this area good for quality bucks? The other area we like is the old burn south of Atlanta, up in the Grouse creek drainage. Would that be worth our time? Thanks again for the great information guys!

brn2hunt, I drew this tag last year. We hunted up in the Grouse Cr. drainage and the neighboring drainages. We hunted the first week and like everyone said it does get hot. Send me an Email and we can talk some specifics. [email protected]

brn2 hunt you are on the right track with your comments about where you were thinking about going.
Hit the wilderness up high and as far North as you can get up on the ridge tops. If you can spike camp on top so you don't have to walk up and down each day you will save a LOT of energy.

Glass all day. Those bucks get up every few hours and grab a bite, stretch and lay back down.
Morning is better than evening.

When you find the bucks more than likely you will find them in small groups. You may have to cover several basins before you find a group of bucks. Don't get discouraged, they are there.

Use the Grouse, Trail and Decker creek area as your backup.
There are tons of small bucks in there and a few larger ones and the access is quite easy.

I hunted unit 39 last year around the end of Oct. We tried several areas- one being the Atlanta area and the other towards Sheep Mt. The weather was hotter than a firecracker. I shot at a reasonable buck right at the top of a ridge. Saw only one other small buck, and maybe 25-30 does. Shoot me an e-mail if you want specifics.
