Could you please email me with regards to your advice on the Sundance area. I will be headed there in two weeks and would appreciated any assistance you could offer. Thanks in advance.

Cheesehead,
I hunted there last year the week of Thanksgiving, probably a little too late in the season. We hunted the Black Hills Nat. Forest north of Sundance, only saw one muley buck worth even thinking about shooting. I think we were too late in the season, nothing against the locals, but most of the deer seem to be shot off of the roads. Saw most of the muleys on Sheepnose Mtn. and off the Peterson fire trails and many off of the road. You will see way more whitetails than muleys and will see some definite wall hanger whitetails. There is some public land south of town, but we didn't hunt it. Get off the gated roads and hike, you will find some bigger deer. We went out there for a muley, but all of us ended up taking a whitetail as they were rutting alot more than the muleys were. We did find some better spots on the north side of the Nat. Forest above Hwy. 24 I think it was. A little bit more rugged terrain, just park at a gate and hike back a mile or two and get away from the roads. I hope to go back out there next fall but will go the first week of the season instead of the last. Sundance is a very friendly town with great people. There is tons of public land around there, maybe someone else can narrow down some better muley spots, all the big deer we found were whitetails..

Thanks for the info Zamguy. Based off the harvest data looks like the far West units in A (1,3,& 5) have the higher mule deer kill ratio. This is why we are concentrating on the West side. May have to end up taking a nice whitetail, but I never have got a muley. Really appreciate the info. Thanks.
