hi y'all!!!!

i'm am fairly new to this site and would like your guys input
on what you think of the oquirrh-stansbury limited entry unit
for archery elk?????

i have 7 points for elk and some people have told me this unit would be a 100% draw for archery. flippin sticks is my thing so i want to stick to archery.

what is everybodys opinion on this unit?
is it worth it? quality of bulls? access points?
i am a DIY backpack hunter so i am not afraid to work if it is worth it.

i just don't know squat about that unit.

i thank y'all in advance and look forward to what is said and don't be shy let me have it!!!!

I have hunted deer in that unit alot. I have seen some like 300-320 class bulls. I am sure there are larger, but I would use those points on a better unit for sure. Look at like Manti or Nebo. Those units take about the same amount of points with ALOT better bulls.

I work for the division of wildlife resources monitoring big horn sheep on the Stansbury Mountains. I have worked all over the mountain for the past 2 years. Here is what I have seen and my honest opinion. On the Stansbury Mountains there are about 250 elk based on our fly overs and sightings, Maybe 310 if you count the elk that winter on the "depot". The majority of those elk are younger bulls. I have seen about 10 bulls that would be shooters; 300 or bigger. Every year I see one big bull, but they seem to disappear and rarely get shot, especially with a bow.
The Oquirhh mountains have more elk but many of them spend time on private property during the summer months or are in Juniper and move 5-10 miles a day sometimes depending on water. Also the antler growth if you are looking at score is poor on both mountains but worse on the Oquirrhs. Many bulls have really small thirds and fifths on the Oquirrhs.
Anyway that's all I have too say. Maybe call Tom Becker the regions biologist(435)830-2571. He'll tell you more specific info and why you might want to look elswhere.
With seven points you can draw a sweet hunt, I would do some more research and not settle for less, just because you want an elk!!!

I had an archery tag o nthe manti 3 years ago. I saw some monster bulls. I would definately look at other units with your point. I would look at Manti or Wasatch. There are some great bulls on these units.

thank you all for your input

after more research i decided to put in for the
manti unit as my 1st choice and wasatch 2nd.

i'll let you know how it goes.

again thanks to all who responded to me

LAST EDITED ON Jan-24-08 AT 03:40PM (MST)[p]I got to this thread late sorry(away from puter for a week) but i have very important info pertaining to the question. My cousin took this pic of an Oq/Stan heard bull thats been eating his horses feed.......probably not the kinda heard bull your looking for.

That looks like Soldier Canyon Road. To be fair, those are NOT herd bulls, even on this unit. A friend of mine took a 370+ bull on the archery hunt in 2007. I have seen several 360+ bulls on this unit in the last couple of weeks as well.

Sorry you didn't catch the sarcasm, pro! I'm just trying to scare a few more hunters out of the OQ/Stans, til i draw! His property is in Stockton.
