LAST EDITED ON Feb-19-08 AT 09:34PM (MST)[p]Hey guys! New to the site! Was looking for any info on an archery hunt in New mexico or Arizona. A buddy and I are looking to hunt elk with our bows for the first time. Not looking for anything special just a chance at a bull. Any suggestions???

Az will have some sort of OTC tag I heard but in fringe units. If you know the unit or somebody that does you could get into elk but the country will be tough. NM has no OTC tags but some units are an easy draw I think like unit it used to be easy to draw . It would get you into the hills at least. Or you could hunt Co otc with half the country. pm me if you wantt a tip on Co.

If you are just looking for an average bull to get your elk hunting started, then I would suggest some the units in Colorado that offer OTC tags and the public land can be incredible hunting. Units in the northwest part of the state in the Flattops Wilderness area, such as 231, have a great population of elk and with a little hard work and putting some miles on, you should come away happy, maybe not a harvest, but you will see elk and have a good hunt and the scenery is spectacular. Anyways, just a suggestion. Let me know if I can help with anything.

Basically Az is a waiting game where you build points for years until you draw, better the unit, longer the wait. Too late to apply this year anyways.

NM has no points and very long odds of drawing their best units in the best archery seasons. In some units their archery run as follows: 1st: sept 1-10, 2nd sept 11-18, 3rd sept19-24. You see as the hunt gets closer to the rut, it gets shorter. Some units run archery sept 1-22. Some of the less popular units have good numbers of elk, with less trophy potential and great draw odds.

Colorado has OTC archery tags for a large portion of the state. Like said above, effort will get you away from the masses and into elk.

Where you from in Kali?????

Im from the central coast of cali. About 3 hours north of los angeles. I live in Santa Maria. Where are you from?

To hunt elk in AZ in sept. you have to be very lucky or have alot of bonus points as it can take alot of years to draw a tag in sept and the AZ application period ended 2/12/08. They do have a late season OTC hunt this year.

NM, as stated before is draw or landowner tag and the demand for the unit sets the price for the landowner tags. Better units start at about $3500 just for the landowner voucher then you have to buy a tag and thats another $500 TO $766 depending on how the state ranks the unit. ie. Quality/High Demand or Standard. The NM Draw ends on April 7 or close to it. Good luck.

Ohh thats a great area. I have been trying to draw a M3 tag forever now. What elk hunt do you put in for up your way. I have a few points trying to draw our local hunt.

Ca, where near Susanville? There's hardly anything between there and Reno. I have good friends in Susanville, work at the joint.
