Does anybody know if it is worth hunting Colorado Unit 13 south of Craig and Hayden during the first rifle season? And is there a lot of public land in this unit?

This unit has very little public land, small parcels of BLM is all that is available,it would not be a choice of mine for first season elk.Any property that holds elk during the first season will be private and will cost you big bucks to hunt on it.
Maybe someone else knows of some public land there that holds some elk.

I guess we are planning a hunt in units # 11,12,13,23,24,25,26,33,34,131,211, & 231. Does anybody know if any of these hold a decent amound of public land? I could use some help on this. Thanks!

units 13 and 131 has limited amount of public land ,the rest of the units have lots of public land, take your pic.

Your best bet is to call the BLM and order the Craig and Meeker maps, perhaps a couple others, and start studying where the public land is. A word of caution...lots of public land in the west does not have public access. Even if you see a road to it on the map it might be a private ranch road.

As has been mentioned most of 13 is private. Very few elk during the archery season. Great later in the year after the snows fall.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-05-08 AT 08:14PM (MST)[p]What is the Elk hunting like around the White River National and Flat Tops area in the early rifle season? Also, is there good access to that area?

Unit 12 has alot of public and has some pretty good elk in their. Not anything big, but some decent bulls. I hunt it during the archery seasons, but I hear they do quite well their during the 1st and 2nd rifle seasons, but no first hand knowledge about the rifle hunts, strictly an archery hunter here. I hunt up around Vaughn Lake just down from Ripple Creek Pass. Check it out, it might just work out.
