Elk that score well

I need to learn what generally separates bulls that score well from those that suffer ground shrinkage.

I do like bulls that have extra tines & will sacrifice points for character, but given a quick glance at a bull what do you look for as a guide ?

Well I'm not a guide or a elk expert, but it always seem like tine length has alot to do with a good scoring bull. I'm sure the rest of these guys will have a lot better info than that for you though. Did you draw a good tag?
Good luck,
Dave

If your going for score.. you want every tine to be 20 inches dude... 30 inches of mass per side plus a 50 inch beam is a 400 inch bull.

Or this.......

It would need a 40" inside spread to make 400", just to be accurate using your numbers. ;-)

B_F_E,
As if you can't get a glance at a bull and give us a score within a couple inches!!! Having grown up with monster bulls in your backyard, come on!! LOL...
We may be looking at a pending world record from you as you probably have one already tied up and feeding him steroids, but then I won't tell anyone....

Just dont gamble when judging bulls make sure you can see both sides of the rack from top to bottom, look for mass and those real long lengths on each and every tine.Last year I did a little gambling and lost. This is the best advice I can give when the chips are down no matter what, make sure you can see everything on that bull of a lifetime if its huge and you know it take him.If you have to try and talk yourself into something like I hope the location on the rack is good that I cant see real well DO NOT SHOOT.Thats gambling and odds are you will lose.

Yea, make that 52 inch beams.. and a 36" inside :) I doubt most bulls have a true 40" inside spread.

A smart guy told me this method for judging beam length. If he has fairly long Swords, 20" or better, look for him to have as much or more beam length behind the Swords to achieve a 50"+ beam.

War,
".Last year I did a little gambling and lost. "
Are you kidding me? I would shoot either of your bulls from last year, anywhere anytime! Great great bulls.

I like ktc's theory of the "holy sh*t" look, those are no brainers and hopefully a "slamdunk" (small pun intended).

I look at bulls from a long distance at first, sometime miles and miles through big spotting scopes.
Naturally I look for the big back ends 1st, 3rd's second, then beam length.

Like pro said too, those first 4 points have got to be in 18" range at LEAST, but 20's are the ticket, along with a beam of over 50" and it is pretty much a gurantee that you right there looking at a "BIG" bull, 380" or better.

Mass seems to be pretty "standard" in the 30-35" per side range, the further apart the tines are on the beam, usually means less mass. Compact bulls usually have better H measurements between those points.
Inside width can very a LOT between bulls, but obviously the wider the better.

Just wait for about 5 more months and Pro will post a picture on what a "perfect bull" is supposed to look like :)

Man! I am excited to get Pro hunting, this waiting crap is killing me!
Like I said earlier, with the help he has, this thing is a SLAMDUNK. No pun intended.

Lol.....do you think Pro's feeling the pressure yet with all this ribbing??

He's tough, he can handle it.

And i'll get my turn when i draw my Henry's deer next year :)

The only pressure I ma feeling right now is from my turkey hunt which starts in 14+ hours! Just fine tuned the bow, now it's all on me.

I'm far from an expert on elk, but I can tell you sometimes its not easy to judge them.

My Wyoming archery bull from last year, for me, was a tough bull to judge. Not tough to tell he was well worth taking, but I was about 20 inches off on the score.

He doesnt have a lot of what some here have said a bull must have to score well. None of his first three points are over 18. The inside spread is very average.

But, he does have some very long main beams, good but not great 4ths, but his 5ths are about as good as they get. Mass was pretty good too.

I saw this bull twice a couple days before I shot him, and had a long time to judge him. I was not even close on the score...largely because I didnt give the top as much credit as I should have. The 5ths make up a lot of ground on not having the best bottom 3 points.

My point is just be aware that a bull with a good, solid frame, that has something extra on a tine or two may be worth a closer look.

I thought my bull would gross score 350...if anything maybe a pinch less. The guy I was hunting with thought the same thing. I was a bit shocked when I got around to taping him a couple days after killing him. Officially gross scored 372 0/8 and net scored 358 5/8.
