I Drew a 16d Rifle Tag. Never Hunted there before. Was hoping for a little info on where to start scouting. I'm trying to get there a couple of days before the season opens. Any info would be great.

Check out page 44 of the current Trophy Hunter. The two guys in the pic are my hunting partner and his dad. Same hunt last year. To find elk in 16D you have to close your eyes spin till you get dizzy and start to walk in the direction you end up pointing. The unit has elk all over it. I have hunted it at least 7 times in the last 5 years (my hunts, friend and family. Granted you will need to hoof it a little off the beaten path by the second hunt to find the bulls, but you should have no problem finding elk. One word of advice. You don't have to and probably don't want to climb and hunt Eagle Peak. Stick to the middle of the unit and you will be right in with the elk. My advice hunt the south end of the unit.

awesome bull! You must be 'Tony' mentioned in the article?
What did the bull score out of curiosity?

Yes, I'm Tony. I was behind the camera. He's not that big, but the fact that we were able to drag my buddy's dad up there to get his first elk made it a trophy. He scores in the 320's. Not the biggest bull, but for his first it was very nice.

Only 320?!
He sure looks a lot bigger than that!
Maybe you missed the spread credit or something!
LOL!
Sweeet bull!
Jeff

Great looking bull!
I'd like to see a side view picture. Any chance you could post some more pic's?

I got 325 each and every time I measured it. There was some ground shrinkage and the pics definately are in favor of the bull, but it was my dad's first elk ever at 60 years of age so, needless to say, he was a very happy camper.

Tony pretty much summed it up for you guys. There are elk all over that unit. However, on the 2nd rifle hunt, your best bet is to find an area in which you can get away from the road. It's kind of hard to do out there as there are logging roads and 2-tracks everywhere, and idiots like to patrol even the closed ones on their 4-wheelers. We've actually seen guys trying to call while still seated on the damned things. Please, don't be one of them.

Yup, my hands down fav, but as my good bud said it is hard to draw. Like he said keep off the quad and you will see elk just about everywhere. I don't know how many times I have seen guys push the elk with thier quads. I know (hope) you are all better than this, but please don't drive on "closed" roads. They are closed for a reason. If people would just walk in on the closed roads it would make for a better hunt all the way around. Trust us you will be in elk the entire time no matter where you go in the unit. If you are not in elk just keep walking another 10 mintues and you will be. Doesn't matter what direction. I have not gone to one place in that unit without see elk.
