I hunted 53 many times before. Last two times got snowed out in the higher elevations I need advice for lower areas. Any help would be appreciated anyone been out there yet.

Hunted the archery season last year and found the elk out in the sage flats. I never expected to see the elk standing out in the middle of no cover, but you should be able to get close enough with a rifle. The majority of elk I saw were within a couple miles of Questa. Unfortunately the Cerro portion is closed to non-archery hunting. I bought my tag last year and got drawn 3rd choice this year, so I can probably give you a heads up before your season. BTW the rut hadn't even started by the end of bow season last year...told by the residents that the calving took places two months later than expected.

Were you North or South of Questa? I guess I don't know where the sage flats are. I also heard that somewhere North of Questa you can catch them leaving the hay fields and crossing the highway going back East. Seems like there is a lot of private land along the highway so I don't know where that is at either.

I would see them north of Questa mostly on the west side of the road all the way to the river/gorge. What I'm calling the sage flats is simply the open country mostly on the west side of the road between Questa and Colorado. You'll see the elk crossing signs all through there, so you'll know you're in the right place.

Hunt1 thanks for the advice. I am just afraid the locals will have me hanging from a tree if I hunt in that area....
