this year i decided to try archery elk hunting. the last few years I have gone with my friends, helped call in bulls and watched as most of our well thought out plans were not so great after all. well as most of you know this year was hot, dry and just not the way i picture elk hunting. at the first of the hunt the elk were comming into water well after dark and didnt move much during light hours. there were alot of days with very little activity of any kind.
a few weeks in to the hunt i got my first chance to watch a group of elk at a watering hole. there were three spikes and the thought ran through my mind to shoot one because it wound be my first bow kill.
after that work kept piling up and i couldnt get away to hunt elk. my plan was to have the last week of the hunt off work and just hunt my ace off! ya that didnt happen!
The next time i got out was sept 11. i would be my last time out because in the evening I had a wedding dinner for my sister that was getting married the next day we left early, got up to the top just before light. when we turned off our atv's we could hear bulls bugling all around us. we walked down the dirt road getting ready to drop off the top to glass when i could hear a bull raking a tree. i came over the top to find the bull still having its way with the tree so i snuck down to him. every time he would rake i would move in on him. then when he was looking around i stayed low behing the brush just hoping he would continue. just as i got into position he started straight away heading for the cows. i cow called and he turned broadside and he pegged me as i tried to draw back. i stood still for just a few seconds just hoping he wouldnt see me. he turned to look back at the cows and as he did i drew back, put the pin where i thought it should be and let it fly. i heard it him then saw the arrow mid way up just behind the shoulder and i knew he wouldnt go far.
he is my first archery bull and now my biggest comming in around 320. i didnt realize how big he was til we put a tape on him. i was in shock because i didnt think he would go over 300. it was a great hunt even though it wasnt great conditions in my mind! sorry about the pics i kinda made a mess of him before i thought to take some pics!

That is awesome! Congrats on a heck of a 1st bull! Way to stick with it. It has been a very difficult Bowhunt for LE elk! Great job getting a great bull!

Great bull and way to do what ever it takes when the bull is not cooperating. Nice stock. Congrats.

one wet boot,

Congrats on a very good bull! It is always nice to get some added score surprise! I say if they look good, shoot em! Very nice!

Congratulations! That's a very fine bull, and it sounds like the experience of your hunt was every bit as good as your bull. I hope that you're now hooked on archery elk hunting, it is the greatest IMO.

I hope this is the first of many great archery elk hunts for you.

lol ya i was way off with my 285 guess! it didnt set in till i got home and got to look at it and relax a little. i just didnt expect to shoot a 300 class bull till i draw a LE tag.

Great bull. Awesome accomplishment! First bull... you know how to out do yourself! :)

Just a suggestion. Your going to be taking several other bulls and bucks in your life. If you can... take somemore photos, if you haven't already and savor the moment with some good photos of you and your bull. Read up on Eastmans Hunting Magazine about photo taking. They have some good recommendations that you will be able to brag about and showcase for years to come. You first bull is special. Re-take some less exposed carnage shots. Get the bull head or if you just have the rack now... Get some more photos and snap away.

I been taught you can't take enough photos. You can go through one hundred until you get it right.

Good luck and congratulations.

Midnight, usually we take alot of pics! my wife is a professional photographer and I always make her take them. but she could not be there. the day i shot my bull i had to be at my sisters wedding dinner that evening and i had to bust a nut just to get it out. I had the kid with me take a few pics just so i could have some at the kill site. We got it out and i was only 6 minutes late to the dinner.

If I had to do it over again i would of missed her wedding dinner! i dont think she even realized i was there!

Thanks for the info! i agree you can never take enough pics! :)

Nice bull! Way to go and CONGRATS! Did you take a big ol' bite of the liver and heart like Burt from Vernal did in Andy's post? (can you tell I'm still traumatized by that???)

Way to go one_dryboot! I have to laugh about you hurrying to get to your sisters wedding dinner. One year my sister got married on OPENING DAY of deer season. Right after the wedding I took off for the hills. That evening I killed a very good blacktail buck. I told my sister I would forgive her, but I would never forget!:)

That's a great bull!

Eel

KKK, No Liver and Heart bites going on here! I almost threw up thinking about it!!! Maybe a few years ago i would give it a try!

Eel, I really think on the days your not supposed to be on the hill are the days you need to be on the hill! I wish I had a few more sisters to ship off during the hunt!

Dryboot- am I to assume then that you got this bull in a Utah any bull unit? If so, all the more congrats on killing a great bull in a tough to hunt unit.
