What's in your pick-up?

Over the years I've collected a sort of minimum set of stuff to have in my pick-up, when I head out to scout or hunt. I did a little research to see what it might cost, if I had to buy it all at one time. At over $600, it's not peanuts but we pay tens of thousands for our trucks, it seems a small amount to raise the odds that you get home with our fenders on. If you shopped around you could get most of this stuff for half of retail, slightly used.

Here is my list, with the exception of the HiLift jack, and the coil of cable, it will all fit behind the rear seat and in a couple of 5 gallon buckets. I've use it all, at one time or another, over the years.

Tire chains all 4 , shovel, maul , 2 20' Web slings, shackles, first aid kit and whatever else I have in my backpack that I take with me, winter time snowshoes

full set of chains, straps, come-a-long, two tow straps, shovel, a few misc snacks/couple water bottles. extra jacket, fire starting stuff, headlamp and flashlight, spare batteries, binocs, gps, gloves, knives.
Might be forgetting something, would like a on board/portable air compressor one day though.

a friend of mine carries a sump pump, not sure why but one day we needed it at his kids house :) He seems like a magician, same as my dad. Not sure how they hide all that stuff in their trucks and still have room, I guess it comes with age ;)

I like to keep mine cleaned out and rely on the next guy down the road to help me...especially when there's no way I'm prepared to help anyone else!

Sound familiar to some guys you've run into?

Yep Zeke, in the early years, I was one of those guys you're referring to. :) I learned, little by little, from sad experience what to have with me so I didn't need to wait on a good neighbor, to come find me. Cuz some times it was a long wait or a long walk.

As cheap as the Level One stuff is, especially if you do a little checking on KSL Classified, Craigs list, or other used add locations, you can purchase most of this stuff for a lot less than new.

I think every Dad, should try to make sure every son and daughter that heads out in to the field, on their own, in our truck or their own, goes with at least Level One stuff and knows how to use it.

By the time my kids were sixteen and older I never could figure out what to get them for birthdays and Christmas, I should have been filling the back of their trucks with these items. I know some Dads do but I didn't and I should have. Everyone of them has needed it on numerous occasions.

Same thing as any other lighter BeanMan. I keep a Bics in my glove box and but if I can only have one, I like the longer reach and I can hold it on indefinitely, without frying my thumb. I've cussed them a time or two but always been able to get them to light after a good wrestling match, if they aren't out of butane. Mostly never had a problem. Just a minor convenience to have a long reach.

What do you carry?

DC

I was definitely happy I carried a saw and tow strap when a wind gust blew a huge tree blocking the road on a late hunt. It would have been lots more time to walk out for help.

>hide a key

yep forgot that, I have one tide up underneath with wire. Locked myself out twice, never again..

One time had to throw a boat anchor through my window, other time was able to get a ride.
