I need help deciding which unit to hunt late-season elk. I'm a non-resident with 15 points looks like I can draw either unit just looking for information which unit everybody thinks is better ? Thanks

LAST EDITED ON Feb-09-18 AT 07:49AM (MST)[p]Of course, then you have to decide if you put in for the mid late (2nd season) or the late late (3rd). Tough choice too. Mid is still at the end of the rut and 3rd is reported that many bulls have busted points.

And I think both are weather and luck dependent. A few years back, one of the regulars on here posted about his wife taking a 390 bull on the late fishlake.

I've done the FL late hunt. Had a good time and would love doing it again.

With that being said I'll second John on quality. It's been going down each year IMO over the last 5 years. Good bulls are still to be had though.

Funny how everyone's saying the Manti is a better unit. That's exactly what I would say if just put in for a fish lake tag.

Well, good for you. People ask you a question and trust that your response is honest. If you don't want to tip your hand thats fine. I don't blame you. Don't respond at all then. Lying to fellow hunters who are assuming you're honest is pure BS. It almost sounds like you're proud of that. WOW.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-11-18 AT 10:49AM (MST)[p]Total strangers on the internet telling an untruth?? Say it ain't so!!! Surely that couldn't happen.

Anyone who comes on this or any other site for basically the first time after 16 years of collecting points and expects to get great info from guys in the know (who may be putting in for one of the same few tags) needs a reality check. It is only a piece of the puzzle that you have to plug into your formula for figuring out what to do.

I never said i bs on this site or any other site. Just to people i talk to. Your response seemed like you were mad.

I just know that most guys putting in (or a good percentage) for Co, Utah, etc look at this site. You really think that every guy sitting on a dozen pts and worrying about "am i gonna draw this year" isnt thinking the same thing.

No need for you to be sturing up stuff. He asked a question and we gave a honest answer. I haven't look at the odds for a nonresident. But I have printed off for the residents. With 15 points a resident would draw. The mid season hunt is tough with all of the spike hunters .

This seems to be the sentiment on all units in the state--It's not what it used to be. I have never hunted Fishlake, but had a cool hunting experience helping a buddy out on the Manti a couple years ago. It's a big unit, with a ton of big country, and a lot of elk. Horses will help, if you've got them.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-18-18 AT 12:07PM (MST)[p]I've heard the Manti hunt has went down hill too. I met a guy on the Book Cliffs that regularly hunted the late Manti with good success, and he said the addition of the second season hurt the quality of the late hunt. New members really get blasted on all these forums. This is my first post, better get my count up before I ask for help.

Eh screw these guys! If I had info on either I would let you know regardless how long you have been on here! Hunting in general is getting to be a joke it's a bull crap who shot the biggest animal! I'm going to be trying to draw the manti soon ill be scouting this year on it I'll let u know if I find any good info

All of this nasty talk from some of you posters. Bucklite the original poster has never made another comment. If he does draw a tag? Bucklite just lets us know. Someone will help you out. If you want to see some of the bulls that got taken off Fish lake last year. I have pictures of quite a few. I have helped a few on the Fish lake unit. Guides ,residents or nonresident. Lend out gear such as game carts ect. I spend a lot of time on that mountain and love the wildlife there. If we can help , let us know if you draw. Good luck!!!

Actually, he got some pretty good info on this thread. You always have to wade through some bad stuff if you want some good stuff on the internet. That said, I will be surprised if we hear from him again. Typical post right before the drawing deadline.

I agree with BIGJOHNT and Gledeasy. We have a cabin there as well and spend a lot of time up there. I ate my tag a few years ago on the archery hunt. I saw plenty of nice bulls, passed on some I probably shouldn't have with an archery tag, chased some bruisers but couldn't get it done. Over the last few years it has gone down in quality. The DWR is managing it more for opportunity and not the older age class. Lot's of young bulls now. It is a harder hunt. Lots and lots of timber with a few glassing ridges. 4 CWMUs that the elk like to stay on. I have hunted the Manti too a few times (archery elk, spike or cow) and had a good experience. Tough call. Good luck.

With them raising the numbers up on the Fishlake, it has to be going downhill on quality, but there are still some good bulls up there. And if someone draws who doesn't know the area, some good person will step and help them out. It is sad to know that someone would deliberately lead someone astray.
Just look Big John up.....He is always on the mountain in the summer! or stop by and say hi, I'm always at the lake...

Some of us just have a hunting addiction if we get a tag or not. ???? It's hard to stay away when they are bugling.
