I have 19 points and I'm drawing a utah elk tag this year. Right now I'm leaning towards mt dutton late hunt. But I am considering the early bookcliffs roadless. I have horses so I can get around easier. I'm physically fit as well. What do you guys think? Is there another unit that I'm over looking?
Any help would be great. Thanks

I Don't know Who all got What this year!

But the Only Big Bull that I Heard of coming out of the Roadless Book Cliffs was a local Archery Hunter!

You might wanna check with other Hunters that Hunted it!

Res or non res? If I waited that long I would want to hunt them during the rut and enjoy all it has to offer, but that's just my opinion. Wasatch or maybe Dutton early.

Resident or Non Res? 19 puts you on the cusp of a Wasatch tag. probably still a couple 2-3 years out on the premium though.

In all reality its a rough place to be as far as points go, just out of reach of some of the better tags to have, but still too many points to just dump on a bad hunt.

My personal opinion is that the Wasatch is the place to be next year. Still going to have a bunch of other hunters on the mtn, but quality of hunt, bull, and experience is way up right now

I shot my bull at 3 yards. He was screaming his head off. You can experience the rut without needing a big bull tag.

The late hunts where you can look them over and they are in the same general area the next day is funner imo. Finding a bull that turns your crank, knowing what he is, and putting a stock on one without bugs, snakes, and heat is the best.

I like to use my glass a lot so that type of hunting is for me. Chasing elk in the trees and getting glimpses of hooves and rumps is less fun for me.

To each his own.

It's been a few years since I've seen a bull on the wasatch worth burning 19 pts for. But that's my own humble opinion from someone that spent more time there than most hunting hiking and looking..

I would apply for early Dutton or the Boulder unit.

I am semi biased. But if you want more opportunity, I would be looking at the Wasatch and Manti multi season. You are guaranteed Manti and you might be 1 more year to Wasatch.

This year on the Wasatch was more like 10 years ago. The amount of bulls and the quality was way up, at least in my experience.

The multi season gives you the rut and if you still haven't found a bull it gives you two rifle hunts that are after the rut.

No way I would BLOW 19 points on the wasatch hunt. I would do the manti way before I did the wasatch. not saying you couldnt get a 280 or better bull on the wasatch. there are just alot better units in the state with that many points imo

Manti multi-season tag took 21 points last year to be guaranteed. There are still 13 people that didn't draw last year with more points than you, and likely ~6 max bonus pool tag holders.

Wasatch took 19 points last year for multi-season tag. But there are 16 people leftover from last year that had 18, and will go in this year with 19 points as well for ~11 tags.

So if you absolutely want to hunt in 2019, neither multi-season tag will be guaranteed for you, but a pretty dang good chance (better than 50%) on the Wasatch. Likely 2-3 years out for Manti at best.

From what I've heard the Dutton late tag can be incredible if you get weather to force bulls into there. Can be tough for big bulls otherwise. Elkassassin says there isn't a bull left on the Books. So I wouldn't put in there.

Hey berry, I'm not on Facebook but checked out your link in your signature. Looks like you guys killed some STUDS this year!

Well done.

If you have 19 NR points you're not going to draw the BC roadless, or even the BC Little Creek. I am a NR with 20 points and I didn't draw the BC Little Creek this year. you need to look at something you could have drawn with 18 this year if you want a realistic chance.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with 21 but probably something different.

Some good bulls taken on the Manti this year. And with the big burns on the north end of the unit last year, a hopefully good winter, there will be a good amount of feed in those area's that could prompt some really good antler growth. Even if not the Manti is still a great unit and one to consider.

Hopefully you meant 380"......?

It all depends on what type of hunt you want. The packing in and hunting from horses is what you want as the experience, the roadless Bookcliffs can be a fun hunt. If you are wanting a truly big bull, I'm sorry to say the Bookcliffs is going to be tough. As someone who hunts the Bookcliffs hard and has for over a quarter a century, I have to say the spike elk hunt has destroyed the quality. Anyone who says different hasn't spent the time there to know.

Good to know. I didn't wait 21 years to hunt raghorns.

But I might wait another 5-10 to hunt so so bulls the way it's going. time doesn't seem to be on anyone's side in UT anymore.

It looks like SFW is pushing to shut down the late dutton elk hunt, so that isn't even an option anymore. Little disappointed about that.

Where did you hear this?

That SFW motion did not pass.

Take notes, folks. Remember what these guys are doing with YOUR tags.

No, the motion to remove the late Dutton hunt failed. They stated they could possibly look at reducing the number at their meeting in April when they set tag numbers, but they did not end the late Dutton hunt.

Apparently too many of us common folk were killing ?SFW?s? big elk from the surrounding units on that late hunt. We can't gave that, now can we?

There are only 6 votes on the Wildlife Board, by the way. You may be referring to one of the RACs passing the recommendation.

Beware: SFW usually doesn't stop until they get exactly what they want. This isn't over for them. I'm sure they will work to greatly reduce the tag numbers for that hunt in the April board meeting.
