Colorado Unit 61 drop off?

Like many, last year I turned the tag in due to the fire and will try again this year.

I know the internet is a snap shot of what goes on, but it sure seems like the level of decent bulls has really fallen off lately in 61. Do you think we are finally seeing the effects of the early rifle season? That being the older bulls are getting picked off?

A few years back (pre early 61 rifle hunt) guys I know said they would always see some + 300 class elk and some that were really nice. I'm just not hearing that as of late.

Regardless, I will be there this fall. Am I out to lunch with what I'm hearing or not seeing?

I was talking to a buddy tonight about the same thing. I still have 61 circled, however. 1st rifle may have sniped some big bulls, but muzzy in 61 still beats trying to beat the creep in the northwest. After 16 years i am just excited to get my boots on the ground.

It has only been three years. I would think it would take a few more years to notice any affects if any at all. Last year was so messed up with the fire and lack of pressure because of road closures. The first two years there were only a handful of quality bulls killed during the early season. Remember they only give out 25? tags and it is a huge unit. I am very envious of anyone that draws a tag this year (archery, muzzy, early, And 1st season)The amount of snow and new growth from the fire, there should be some real big boys getting killed.

Took my cousin in their last year with a first season tag. The hunting was so bad we had to pass 30 bulls before we found one worth shooting. Planning on being back this year with little bro on a first rifle tag again.
