My family is looking into pheasant hunting ND next fall. We have access to some private land when we want it, we just need to let them know pretty quickly when we are coming. My two questions are: How is the pheasant hunting in ND and when is the best time to get up there hunting. Not sure if this will make a difference but we will have my lab and my brothers springer, this will be both dogs first year hunting and my dad has a 4 year old lab that is a solid realiable dog. Thanks for the input in advance.

Never been there. Surprised you didn't get any responses. ND and SD are fantastic. And I will hunt them in the next few years. Just got to figure out which year I Preference Point all big game applications.

One of the 2 require Non-residents to enter a draw for upland. I believe it's SD but not sure.

What area of the state are you looking at hunting?

SW ND has some fantastic pheasant hunting, SE can also be very good. But keep in mind, its been a long, hard winter, and there will be some areas of the state with substantial winter kill.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-25-11 AT 09:29PM (MST)[p]We have access if we want to two different areas in the state, one is Steele, ND and the other is just across the border from Fairview, MT. I have been watching and staying in contact with both places and both say they have had a hard winter. I can only hope for a good spring and a good hatch. Not sure though which area generally is better for pheasant hunting though? Any thoughts on what area is on average more productive.

You can buy a NR license over the counter in SD But if you want to hunt waterfowl at the same time you have to enter the draw for waterfowl. It was a hard winter but Pro Pheasants are re-stocking alot of area's with hens so that will help.
If any one that is looking for a good pheasant hunt check out Clark County SD.

Oakes ND has some of the best hunting for Birds IMO

One of the major factors that determine good Pheasant hunting in NoDak is if the crops have been harvested or not. In the western part of the state where it is drier and the crops are mostly grain it isn't much of an issue the crops come off pretty much the same time every year. In the east where it is wetter the corn could still be standing in December and guess where all the birds are.

I hunt around Oakes every year. Mostly for waterfowl. I love hunting Mallards in flooded Bean fields. Last year we hunted corn fields near a small NWR where the refuge manager told us there were 30,000 mallards there. We were covered in Mallards the whole time. The upland hunting is pretty good too but a lot of it is slough hunting. I prefer to hunt the big expanses of CRP out west where there are more Sharpies.
