I was fortunate enough to take this buck opening day of the Utah 2013 Muzzleloader hunt.
My brother and I packed in a couple miles Tuesday before the opener in an area with some good bucks. I was hoping to better my previous best buck and was able to do just that 5 minutes into shooting light opening morning.
We woke up and and planned on sitting in a spot and glassing a high steep bowl in hopes of finding one of the good bucks I'd seen earlier. We were 60 yds below where we were gonna sit when my brother Jesse (jebediah on MM) saw this deer standing where we were gonna sit. I dropped my pack to get my gun out and he took off running across a shallow draw. I asked my brother if he was a shooter as I hadn't seen him and it was still to dark to make out points. He told me it was about an 18" 3x4 and to take him if I wanted.
I didn't think he was going to stop as he was on a sprint outta there when jeb whistled. He stopped broadside and I pulled the trigger at 130 yds.
My shot hit him high in the shoulder catching the top of his lung and spine and he started tumbling down the hill. He tumbled about 150yds before coming coming to a stop. As we walked up on him he used his front legs to pull himself 60 yds further downhill when I decided to put another in him.
Thanks to jeb for all the help and to my wife for supporting my obsession.
not a monster, but he's my best and I couldn't be happier.
250 gr Barnes Tez pushed by 100gr of BH209 out a CVA Accura with Winchester W209 primers did the job

This is how I'm raising my kids. My daughter was at preschool so she missed the photo shoot.
