I've killed 3 elk in the last 2 years with 100 grains of bh209 and a 290 grain Barnes tez. 1 bull and 2 cows. The bull was shot at 150 yards, the cows were shot at 165 and 195 yards. All one shot kills. The bull dropped in his tracks and both cows went less than 20 yards. It's a deadly combo out of both my omega and optima. I won't hunt with any other bullet/ powder as I have taken several critters with various powder/bullet combinations. This had worked best for me.
I shot one years ago with a Knight BK 92 54 cal. I was using 100 gr of pyrodex RS with a Knight sabot.
I shot one in 2012 with my Hot Rod Renegade it was a Calf. I got it with 80 gr of pyrodex P and a 458 gr Paper Patched Lee 500 S&W bullet.
I got one last year with a Knight MK 85 with the same paper patched load as above. The paper patched bullet in this case hit the cow in the shoulder and crushed the shoulder. It then traveled to the flank where I found it. Ron
Tc encore 250g tc shock waves 100g pellets. Killed one bull in his trackes 132 yards. Two cows at 120 yards went about 60 yards and the other was at 180 yards went less than 5 yards. Very good internal damage. Great accuracy on paper.

85 yards, pass through.
He went down but was still kicking, so I put another one in him.
Second shot piled up behind the off side shoulder.
Have used 100 grains pyrodex and 250 grain Barnes expander Bullets for about 15 years now in three different rifles and had great success with elk and deer at ranges from 15 yards to a couple hundred yards.
Always done me well and no reason to change what has been working!!!
Let's say it's September, you're 200 yards away from the bull of a lifetime and getting closer is not happening. No wind, broadside shot. It's muzzleloader season, and you've got the permit in your pocket.
Now rewind 4 months to June. You're getting ready for the possibility of the above scenario. What bullet do you choose to get ready with?

Shot out of my CVA Accura V2 has accounted for these bulls the last three years.
2011- Shot 130 yards
150 grains of 777 pellets with a 290 grain Barns TMZ sighted in for dead on at 200 yds rear peep sight front sight fiberoptic killed a bull in Nv last year at 48 yards complete pass through second shot was 148 quartering away hit him behind the last rib pulled the bullet out of his off side shoulder. He dropped 20 yards later.
+1 for the Barnes Spitfire TMZ (unless you're in CO, of course). It is accurate and holds together extremely well. Only needs 1000 fps to expand, and if you use 2 777 Magnum pellets, you still have more than enough fps to expand the bullet at 200 yards and still has more than 1000 ft-lbs. of energy. Great bullet for anything you point it at.
