So my wife, with some assistance from my life long hunting buddy and best friend, purchased me a Coues tag for San Carlos, for the rut hunt, Dec. 27-Jan.14,unit B. I have never really hunted these critters and am in the process of trying to learn as much as I can about them. I have purchased Dwaune Adams' book. So I have a question, I know this is a great tag and great Birthday present. Assuming I can learn how to field judge these bucks, would it be unrealistic to hold out for a 100+ buck or should I set my sites lower?

Happy Birthday. My wife buys me clothes. :)

A 100" buck on the SC is quite doable, but with no time to scout due to the tribal rules, plan on spending the first few days doing a lot of glassing to see what's out there before you pull the trigger. You might even think about hiring a native guide for a couple days.

That said, if it comes down to the end of your hunt, it wouldn't be shameful to tag a representative buck that doesn't quite make the 100" mark. IOW, if you see one you like, shoot it and keep the tape measure in your pocket. -TONY (co-author of How to Hunt Coues Deer)

This is advice we should all listen to a little more.....and put the fun instead of competition back in hunting.

Tony, thanks for the input and sorry for the slight in not mentioning you as a co-author when referencing Your Authorative Book. JB my interest in getting a good buck is not about competition , at least not with any fellow hunter. Perhaps competition self imposed. I have been hunting for many years. Over the years I have taken enough game such that my sucess is not measured by harvest but by many other things. I would not consider myself a true trophy hunter, however I do try to exercise a degree of disicipline, and not take something that is smaller that what I have already taken. Years ago a good friend of mind finally got it through my thick skull that you will never shoot the big bucks if you always shoot the small ones. As a result, my hunts now, more often than not, result in me not harvesting. This self imposed "restriction" makes the reward of whenever I do harvest just that much more rewarding. However that does not mean I don't have fun when I do not harvest. I truly enjoy all of my hunts. Sharing my experiences with fellow dedicated hunters, being out doors, testing my skills, just hunting itself, regardless of whether I harvest, all make each hunt fun and enjoyable.

Anyway, I know this is a special tag. I just was thinking I wanted to exercise disicipline, and not take the opportuniy I have been given for granted. And Tony, I gave my wife a very special 50th Birthday party last year, so she is returning the favor this year. I do not usually get something like this for a gift.

caelkhnter,

I sure hope you didn't take my comment the wrong way.....I was commenting on the "big" picture of score obsession and shouldn't have made the comments on this particular thread. Your wife gave you a great gift and I would hold out if I were you. Good luck.

You can buy day use permits or predator permits and check out the San Carlos. You could also make a quail hunting trip to the SC and do some scouting. Ive hunted the SC a few times and a 100" buck is a good goal to shoot for.

Nice birthday present there, best of luck on the hunt.

All I ever get is socks and underwear along with a card. LOL
