I'm considering applying for an Arizona coues deer hunt. I'm just gathering info for now. I'm curious if you guys think one could do a hunt on their own or if they need a guide. I'm a non resident from Oregon, so I have no experience with these deer! Any infor would be appreciated. Brian

Check out coueswhitetail.com. That site has everything you need to know about coues deer. I live in az now, but will be moving to Oregon in about two months. Coues deer are fun to hunt, but live in some very rugged country. Southeastern az has the largest population of deer. The central part of the state doesnt have the numbers, but there are some big bucks there. I think you could hunt without a guide with enough research. Rifle hunts are by draw only, archery is over the counter. Hope this helps!

You could definitely and easily do a coues hunt on your own. Lots of public land and access. Duwayne Adams book, "How to Hunt Coues" is a good source of info. The AZ Game & Fish website gives a breakdown on each hunt unit for the different species.

If you're serious about it, I'd suggest to get the Coues Deer Hunting book by local guide Duwane Adams, cool dude plus he has a map service to get you started. Find the book and his contact info at www.arizonabiggamehunting.com. Mike B.

If you're still looking for info on the gray ghost of the desert - my new book Deer of the Southwest just came out. You can learn more about this at www.deernut.com.
