I am always looking for a new hunting challenge. I am from Az and hunt the coues whitetail quite a bit. This year I would like to try out some blacktail hunting in Ca. I have heard/read that the blacktail can be challenging to hunt as well. I was just wondering what unit would have huntable populations and an Ok draw rate? Not looking for the best trophy spot in the state, I just want to expierence a blacktail hunt.Thanks.

Probably the best chance would be Zone A, the coastal region.

Just my thoughts, but someone might suggest elsewhere, good luck.

IF you want a chance at a trophy (thats a loaded statement) try the B zones. B1, B2, and B5 are the best in my estimation. Tags are not a problem to get. Lots of public ground, liberal seasons and you can purchase two tags!. Good luck.

I say big green(B-zones) is the best chance!
A zone has to little quility(sp?) public land!
Check back in June I will help!

Northern A zone or any of the B zones will be good. They never sell out the tags and you can get two tags. B zone has the best odds of getting a large buck, but there are some large bucks in A zone as well. It probably boils down to what time of the year you want to hunt, and how hot of weather you can stand. The following should be the 2005 seasons.
A zone:
Archery = July 16 to Aug 7
Rifle = Aug 13 to Sept 25

B zone:
Archery = Aug 20 to Sept 11
Rifle = Sept 17 to Oct 23

Hope this helps

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I would probably do one of the early rifle hunts. I think it would be cool to hunt some velvet bucks with a rifle. If I understand correctly, I would be able to purchase two tags over the counter? I will check back when it gets closer.

You can either put in for a draw zone and earn a point and then put B or A zone as your second choice. You are guaranteed either of those 2 zones and if you want to earn points put an X zone as your first choice. Hope this helps.
