I have some questions for those of you who use this type of set up.
Do these cameras perform well in low light?
Out to what range can a quality pictures still be taken? Is 500 yards too much to expect?
Maybe some of you can post some pictures and the approximate range they were taken. Thanks for any feedback. Jake

See my post below about 600mm at various yardages (aka get closer)

The Panasonic FZ200 has a constant f/2.8 and zooms to an equivalent 600mm. This may be a consideration for you.

Canon just came out with an awesome camera. The SX50. It has a 50x zoom, the largest optical zoom on the market. That coupled with their HS processing system gives the most vibrant colors in both bright sunshine or low light situations.
It has a flip out screen and a very long battery life.

Feel free to contact me with any questions about this or any other camera

I shoot an Olympus SP 590UZ with a 26x optical zoom, which is low compared to the newer cameras. For real long distance shooting I use a 1.7x Teleconverter. Here are some examples of what it is capable of producing at well over 500 yards on a tripod. These have been cropped and aren't magazine quality by any means but I think they are way better than what I used to get when I used to take pics through my spotting scope.

Not a big Panasonic fan. Their cameras are OK but their service is terrible. The Canon HS system is awesome in low light and tack sharp with unreal details in bright light. No noise in low light which makes the picture so much better

LAST EDITED ON Apr-18-13 AT 08:37AM (MST)[p]I did a lot of research comparing this same topic last May for a gift for my wife.

I ended up getting a Sony Cybershot DSC-HX200V

Couldn't be happier. Its a 30X but the 60x digital zoom is pretty fricken amazing too.

1920x1080 HD movie, 18.2 MP.

Heavy use for a year and no issues.
