Camera Protection

I'm heading in on a back country elk hunt on horses this fall. I really want to take my Nikon D5100 with me. Do any of you have any advice on a good simple protective case I could get. Ive been looking at the neoprene covers. Not sure if the pack trip will be to rough on the camera and I should just take my small compact camera or not. i would really like to get some quality pictures of the hunt and the country. Any advice would be appreciated.

I use Case Logic SLRC-200 camera holster for my Nikon. Fits my ultra wide angle and 300mm telephoto. Toss it in my pack or tie it to the outside. Picked it up on Amazon for $18.00.
