Just ordered a Remington 700AWR in 338RUM. Anyone have an opinion on factory ammo? I like the specs of Barnes VOR-TX LR 250gr. What about Nosler?

LAST EDITED ON Jun-16-18 AT 07:15AM (MST)[p]I've handloaded the .338 RUM. Settled on the 225 grain Accubond. Shot well and was pretty flat at 3200 plus. I see Nosler loads the Accubond in 250 and 300 grain also. That's where I'd start. That AWR is a sweet rifle. mtmuley

My opinion on factory ammo: It's for suckers! If you are going to be serious about shooting, reloading is mandatory. It isn't about saving money, if you have to rely on manufacturer's and dealers for a particular load, sooner or later you will find a time that you can't find it.

This goes double for non-vanilla chamberings. The .338 rum falls into that category. Manufacturers will do a run for a particular load and then may not do another run for a couple years. Once the supply chain has has been exhausted, it takes some hard scrounging to round it up. I have seen this scenario play out more times than I can count.

I purchased 3 boxes of Barnes 250 gr LR 338RUM for $44 each. If they don't soot well at least I have 60 rounds of brass to reload. I've looked for just the brass to reload and its more expensive than the complete round.

That is often the case. I've bought ammo just for the brass at times when it's cheaper to do so. Other times I buy once-fired brass.

I just ordered a box of Nosler 225gr accubonds , finally they are available.
I have ammo, new Vortex Viper HSLR scope, rings and mounts....the only thing missing is the rifle. Remington says they will have it for me by the first week of Sept. They're not giving me a lot of time to dial in the ammo and scope, I still need to order the "Kenton Ind." custom turret after I figure out which ammo the rifle shoots best.

Two seasons ago I missed two Bull Elk with factory second ammo. These were Federal Trophy Bonded 300wsm. The first box I used to sight in the rifle were OK. The second box I had with me for the hunt and thats when the misses happened. Switched back to Barnes TTSX and sighted in the rifle again and then killed a beautiful Bull with one shot exactly where I aimed.

That's a bummer to hear. I've had great results with Nosler factory seconds - both ammo and projectiles. Maybe the Federal stuff is a different story though.

Either way, I plan on loading for my 338 RUM once I break the barrel in with the factory ammo.

Waspocrew, I ordered two boxes of the Nosler 338 RUM "blems" as you suggested to give em a try. If nothing else the ammo is almost cheaper than brass alone. Should be good rounds to break in the rifle. On first inspection the "blem" factor is limited to barely visible scratches on the brass. No other imperfections visible. The Federal "seconds" had minor dents and case neck cracks. I did not use any of the Federals seconds that were cracked or dented so other issues lay in hiding with that ammo.
