Rain fly for pack

They are nice to have when it is a severe down pour. They also can come in handy for emergency uses as well. I keep one in my pack. I Use the Badlands 2800 that has one in the top pocket. You can also purchase the cover from badlands or even get some different ones at REI or any outdoor/backpacking store.

YOU'RE FAT!! DON'T TRY AND SUGAR COAT IT OR YOU WILL EAT THAT TOO!!

What country are you hunting? I imagine if you are hunting SE Alaska or the Pacific Coast your pack may gradually soak through but in Colo, Wyo, NM, and elsewhere it "usually" rains 1 day and is sunny the next. I have a decent pack and haven't ever worried about a pack-fly...even in Alaska.

With that said, I was on an AK dall sheep hunt a couple years ago and my buddies pack soaked through at the zippers while mine was dry as a bone. He just bought a brand new cheaper pack while I was using a high quality 10 year old pack....you get what you pay for in packs! One thing to consider before your hunt is putting some junk in your pack and spraying it down with a garden hose, sprinkler, or in your shower. Time will tell if there are any leaks and it's a lot better knowing before than during your trip!

If you want to go the super cheap route a thick, plastic garbage bag is pretty cheap...although the plastic may rip on brush. A third option is what I used in Alaska as a backup. I bought several super light dry bags. I used one for my sleeping bag, 1 for camera gear, and another for clothes and other gear I wanted to make certain stayed dry. I'm pretty impervious to super wet weather with my waterproof pack plus the dry bag senerio.

A pack cover would be quick and easy to use but I've always gotten along without one. I guess if I hunted on the coast a bunch I'd probably invest in one!

You can get a inexpensive pack cover made from silicone impregnated nylon (like what a Sil-Tarp is made from).

They are superlight and compress to about the size of a golfball.

In a snap you can also use a heavy duty garbage bag. On a caribou trip a few years ago we were on top of the mountain when a massive storm blew in. We decided to head back to main camp straight down the hill which involved about an hour of bush wacking then at leat an hour through the buck brush. I slipped a garbage bag over my pack (which in theory is a water resistant) while my partner put on his brand new $40 pack cover. I figured my bag would be ripped off in a couple hundred yards but would keep some of the water off my pack. Well lo and behold it made it all the way back to camp with only a few small tears. My buddy said he was going to be returning his pack cover:):)

A garbage bag will definately work but look into one of the generic silcone pack covers.

I always keep a rain fly with me. Eberlestock and Badlands both make a nice one. Eberlestock's large Rain cover is a little larger for the bigger packs.

I use it even if it is a light rain as someone already said the pack may be waterproof but most zippers are not and I normally have stuff in my pack I do not want to get wet lit my Video Camera. Plus I never want to take a chance if there is a downpour and I have to travel in it.

Good Luck.
