They work some but it is solar power and that relies on sun power. If your in the back country and a storm is in with lots of cloud cover etc. You may not get what power you need over several days of bad conditions. I personally would pack a radio that takes the batteries for a power source if my life depended on it. Worth the extra weight.
If you get any type radio devise you need one that gets reception from the satillites. Where we go there is no cell service or radio service unless you get a satillite connection.
