For hunting the backcountry for deer and elk what is the best and lightest sleeping system that you use? I need a light weight sleeping bag and a pad. What do you guys recommend? thanks

Lots of choices. I use Big Anges Polmer Hoyt bag with a air core pad. I like it. I sleep well in it, havent froze to death yet in it, packs down pretty well for backpacking.

One of the nice things about Big Agnes bags, is that they keep the insulation where it is needed most...on top of the bag instead of smashed beneath you. Instead, it has a pocket on the bottom side of the bag, that holds your sleeping pad and enables you to keep both the Bag and the Pad together when compressed for travel - that is 2x BONUS for me - Makes it super convenient!

Seek Outside LBO 19 oz
Big Agnes Q-core SL pad 18 oz
Seek Outside Draft Dodge quilt 20* 23 oz
Borah Gear M90 side zip bivy 7 oz.

Total: 4.18 lbs for my entire shelter/sleep system. Had it down to a verified 20.8* and didn't get cold. Had to wake up and put a hat on though... Got about 15 nights in it so far this year (first time floorless shelter) and doubt I'll ever go back to a tent. Just picked up the annex with stove jack as well for late season hunts...

I use one so light, I about froze to death a few weeks ago. Well, not really, but I was mighty cold. The next two nights I surrounded myself with the saddle pads. Much better! Next time that will be one area that I won't scrimp on.

I use a Cowboy bedroll(Canvas cover) that your bag slides into and it keep ya warm as all get out, BUT it does add weight.

We made them out of Painters drop cloth. Sew it across the Bottom and up one side( Saddle shop did the sewing) and you are done.
We even water proof them with canvas water proofing.
