My son and I need a good back packing tent, 3 or 4 season that we can also incorporate a tarp for added protection/space. Money is a concern of course so I want the best for not so much money....of course right. Matt

I have a Kelty Gunnison 2.0. Great 3 season tent, lots of room and 2 vestibules. Very well made.I have had 18" of snow on it no problem. I use it on my solo hunts for the room. Got it thru Campmore.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-07-13 AT 10:10AM (MST)[p]Matt, go to backcountrygear.com and type in ultralight tents. They have a great selection on tents and tarps. Last year I used a tarp tent in the high country of Colorado and it worked great. The Big Agnes Fly Creek UL 2 is also a nice tent. Good luck.

Take a look at Exped Aries tents. They are super roomy and bomberproof. I've had mine on 2 Alaska trips in extreme conditions and it held up great. If I had the $ I'd get a Hilleberg Nallo but the Aries is very similar and works great! The fly with 2 poles works great for warm weather ultra-light packing situations.

Another reasonably priced 3 or 4 season tent is the Scarp Tarptent. It has rave reviews and is light weight. A third option would be to check Ebay/Craigslist and try to pick up a Hilleberg for a decent price. Hillebergs are about as good as it gets!

Gentleman, Thanks for the sources and opinions. I'll check these sources out. I've considered the tarp/tent because of cost and weight so I'm eager to check those out. I'm going to be scouting in Aug. or Sept. and we're packing in for early rifle hunt so the weather between those dates will be quite different. Sure would like not to have to get two tents. Possible snow is my big concern so having an extra tarp cover or tent/set up that can handle snow would be great. Thanks again, Matt

I've been there and done that with the expensive tents. Found a 2 man at walmart, weighs 4lbs, paid $29.99.

You can't beat it. If the weather is so bad you are concerned for your safety, get out of the country. No tent will withstand a tree falling on it. No matter how much it costs.

Expensive doesn't always mean, better.

Smitty, Timberline, Thanks for adding in... I checked out Walmart and there's a few possibilities as well as other camp/pack items. I've got 3 or 4 options at Amazon that are 2/3 men, 3 to 4 season tents for good prices. Price is major concern cause I still have to get a new bag and pad, and some other stuff as well. Can't wait till I have everything I need. :)

The Nemo Losi is the most bang for your buck. I went back and forth between this one and the MSR Mutha Hubba for months. You can go lighter, but 50sq is what I was after.... Good Luck

Gunnie, this is a great tent. I'm looking at a few others for just under 150 because of budget...Thanks for the suggestion. It's more then I can spend now but I'll wait and see if I can pick one up cheaper or if I sell a house soon here in Vegas I can do it. Thanks, Matt PS..if you were or are in the service, thanks for that too.

If you want a great deal on new tents take a look at the Sierra trading post website. You can often get an extra 20 to 35% off their already great prices by signing up for their email deal. If you haven't ever bought from Sierra Trading they provide excellent service and quick delivery! They have a load of tents listed.

Do yourself a favor and check out the reviews for the particluar tents you are interested by doing a google search, You usually get what you pay for with tents and everything else. Rember that your life may depend upon your tent..especially if you are miles from your vehicle!

I settled on this tent at Amazon called the alpismo two man, 4 season for 139 dollars. I based my decision on price, weight, design, space, Thanks for all the suggestions.
