Looking for the best tri pod. The criteria is sturdy, lightweight, able to take a fall. I had a Nikon tri pod but it slowly fell apart in less then a year of use and I couldn't stabilize it while spotting. Suggestions and experiences please.

2nd page of want AD's is a good tripod for sale.

No input here from anyone? I am in the market for a good tripod that I could potentially use for a bino rest, shooting stick, walking sticks, and/or other.

Would love to hear what those who have used these have to say about the various models and manufacturers.

Thanks,

Excavator

Any reviews? Anyone with experience with certain tri pods? I'm still looking after my Nikon tri pod was a disastrous failure.vanguard? Vortex? Bushnell? Etc? Why bog pod? Need something for stable shooting and viewing.reviews please or personal experience, thanks.

Check out the Outdoorsman tripod, pretty much bomb proof and all kinds of accessories that you can buy from bino adapters to gun rests to extension tubes to go taller. I have one for hunting and have never looked back on what I spent for it. They are not inexpensive.

2nd that. if the Outdoosman has any competition I haven't seen it.

Stay thirsty my friends

You might take a look at Gitzo Traveler tripods. They aren't cheap but you get what you pay for! They are made of carbon fiber and super light/tough. I've used and abused mine on everything from Alaska dall sheep to Wyo antelope and mine still almost looks new. I had 5 tripods before I finally splurged and bought a good one that ought to last a lifetime. I believe the Gitzo has a lifetime warrantee to I likely don't have to worry about it anyways!

LAST EDITED ON Dec-18-14 AT 06:53PM (MST)[p]I have several tripods that I am using at the moment.
I have three manfrotto pods.
One Vanguard.
And two Gitzo tripods.

I have owned in the past, the Outdoorsman and a couple others.

If you want my opinion, the best "buy" is a carbon manfrotto.

If you want the best tripod period, its easily the Gitzo.
Jims is absolutely correct in my opinion.
The Gitzo systematic can not be beat. But they will cost you.

I really like the gitzo safari.
I would recommend the Gitzo mountaineer, which series depends on your size and weight preference.

If you want a cheaper option, the outdoorsman is not bad.
But, for the same cost, I would go with a Manfrotto 055CXV3 Its bulletproof.
I have one that has taken three falls (steep rocky sheep country) with my spotting scope on it.
The scope did not survive two of the falls but the tripod is like new.

If you are serious, and you want to buy "one more" tripod, save up, get the Gitzo.
There is a reason they are the number one tripod used by professionals.

Vortex Summit ss is what I have and use. Super light and sturdy, not too expensive. I probably wouldn't want it fully extended with a spotter on it, but otherwise it works well.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-20-14 AT 10:45AM (MST)[p]I have a Manfrotto carbon fiber tripod and its held up well over the last 4 years. Not as light as the outdoors, but not too heavy you can't pack it all day. Good luck in your search there are a lot to choose from these days.

Wow, I just looked up the gitzo and they are spendy.

Some good info.
Anyone using the Gitzo carbon tripod for packing/hiking in willing to share what length and head they use? I have a couple Manfrotto tripods I use for short walks from the vehicle because they are heavy, but very sturdy. I also use an Outdoorsman for packing in, but would like to go to a bigger and lighter carbon tripod. I will use it for both my spotting scope and binoculars.

Thanks
Bill

My Gitzo folds to 21" and 3" wide. It extends to 52" height. I have a G2180 counter balance fluid head. I have hardly ever stood up to glass so could likely get away with a smaller version that extends to sitting height. That would likely save a little weight and bulk but it really doesn't weigh much to begin with.
