we have for the last 15 years hunted wyoming and are just looking to do something different.the area in wyoming we have always hunted has progressively gotten worse and just starting to look at differnt options.i am a realist not expecting miracles on trophys but would be open to any suggestions on colorado for deer or elk.thanks

There are a few public land areas in oklahoma that would offer a descent hunt. Oklahoma now has a 3 day, early october rifle season for youth. I suspect that the hunting pressure is very low on this hunt if it is anything like the youth turkey season in april. The kids get first dibs with a firearm. If interested pm me for suggestions.

pwrlineman,I took my daughter to OKlahoma last year and it was a blast. what part are you located in? would like to hear your suggestions

I'm located north of okc and don't deer hunt any of the public lands. I have, however, turkey hunted some of the public land in western and northwest oklahoma. I have always seen a lot of deer on the canton and black kettle reserve. There are some other smaler ones as well that you could check out. I have heard good things about the Beaver in the panhandle and have seen some good bucks taken out of there. You can view all of the public areas on the wildlife departments web site. Another good one is the fort supply hunting area north of woodward. There are some good bucks there also. Most of the public areas in western oklahoma are sand hills and draws. If you travel to the eastern and southeast parts of the state there is a lot of public land. Most of it will be hilly and heavily timbered. wharehouser has tens of thousands of acres in the southeast that you can hunt with a permit. Most of the hunting areas have designated wardens that I have found to be very helpful.
Like I said earlier, I'd bet that the early youth season would be a great time to hunt the public area's. Let me know if you come down to hunt or need more info.

Thanks for all the info.Last year we hunted south of woodard on some private land and had agreat time my daughter did not take a deer but we had a alot of fun.Do you know if landowners are willing to let you hunt there land if you just knock on there door and ask? Here in Colorado that is pretty common.I will take a look at the maps an see some of the area you have mentioned, again THANKS for your help

It is really tough to find free hunting. It's tough to even get a good lease for less than 5 to 10 dollars an acre. Everything that is good has been leased. NW oklahoma is the most expensive but has some really good hunting if you know someone or are willing to pay. You probly would have better luck winning the lottery than knocking on doors for free hunting.
You may look into some of the controlled hunts on the state lands. You do have to buy a hunting licsence to apply but your kids may not have to if they are under 16. There are several hunts offered to youth only.
What part of colorado are you from? I currently have 7 deer points and hope to make the best of them in the near future. Would a nonresident have as much luck knocking on doors as a resident? I figured I'd have to hunt the mountains but would love to hunt the eastern plains if I could get a lead on some reasonable hunting.

I live in the southwest part of the state in a town called Montrose, plenty of good deer hunting all over the state, the eastern plains is another story tons of private land taken up by private outfitters I hunted it 5 years ago and took a good buck 30 1/2 inches wide but we were hunting private ground my brother in law took a buck that was a pig scoring 238 11x14
there are some great units that are on the western slope that you could get with 7 points unit 55 around gunnison has always produced good deer later in the seasons unit 61 is another good deer unit. what type(size) of deer are you looking for? What is your choice of weapon, Do you have any elk points?

I have 7 points for elk as well. I'll hunt with about anything but prefer a muzzle tag for the increased opprtunity, nice weather, rut, and less pressure. I have deer hunted unit 75/751 a couple of times and managed to take small buck the last time. I usually eat tag soup since I am too picky but that is ok. I'll burn the points when I feel I have a descent chance to find a 170+ inch deer.
I have considered using my elk points to muzzel hunt 751 wilderness, but I'm inclined to wait a few more years to hunt a better unit. In the mean time I could draw a second choice tag. I cannot afford to hunt out of state every year so I have been building points in the off years hoping I can make the best of it when I can! With the point creep it is tough to catch up so I would jump at the opprtunity to take a lead on an up and coming unit.
How about the deer hunting. are most of the deer on private ground during the late hunt? How about quality? I'd prefer to use the points on a late migration/rut hunt. I have been entertainig the idea af a high country muzzel hunt and have been aquiring back packing gear. A high counrty backpack hunt has been a personal goal that I intend to experience.
Anyway, if you come back to Oklahoma I'll try to help you out as much as I can. I'd definately check out black kettle or packsaddle in western Oklahoma. It is close to texas and just north of I-40. Probaby a 10 drive for you. The black kettle lands are a patch work of state lands that are spread over a huge area. I believe there is appx 18k acres.

How about Iowa?? If u folks can send for the pref pts i could put your family into some great whitetails. Didn't u have the hunt in 61 last year? I have pts that i keep hoping to use on a muzzle hunt there soon so maybe we can help one another.

ya i had a 61 archery tag killed a good bull 6x5 .what are the odds that we could draw a tag in Iowa? It soounds very interesting. How many points do you have for elk here in colorado i know that a muzzy tag in 61 will take 14 or better for non resident.

I think u can draw on the 3rd year-archery.I don't know about youth opputunuties however.great potential for 30-150's class w/ always a monster around.I have 17 pts for elk muzzle and haven't drawn 2 yrs running and looks as if i'm up against 14 others w/ same pts 4 this year. 7 tags total to NR. Thinking more about the bow hunt all the time. Feel free to PM if you'd like.

We have some nice whitetails in No Idaho. It's a really long way from Colo, but there's plenty of land and the price is very good for NR juniors. Hunt around Thanksgiving.

Hi There,

I read your post and wanted to contact you to let you know that I have land you may be interested in. I own 160 acres in Northern Minnesota (right outside of Bemidji) where you can hunt whitetails and bear. And there are youth hunts available in the fall. I have a nice farm house on the land with 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a full kitchen, tv, and laundry. Its a hobby farm. You would be able to stay with your kids at the home. Summer time Walleye fishing is also great in this area with lots of lakes.

I also have access to land in Southern Minnesota (Southeast of Rochester) where you can hunt whitetails and turkeys.

I am interested in hearing more about area 61 for Elk Hunting. It sounds like that is near your area. Any information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Please contact me either on this forum or you may send me a personal message, too.

Thank you.

Greg

Greg, 61 is a great elk unit, hard to draw tags, I drew last year with 10 points as a resident for archery. If you get a tag you are in for a treat. Do you have points for Colorado? What type of weapon do you plan on using?I am about 30 minutes from the unit and spend alot of time up there in the summer and fall.If you go to the colorado forum and go back to page 6 there are some pictures of my bull its under 61 bull ,there are pictures of 2 other bulls that were taken in 61 close to page 6 ,there was a bull that scored 357 taken during the muzzy season.Fill me in on what you are planning and I will do what ever I can to help you out
