2017 Any Weapon hunt

Hello,

I am a non-resident from Kansas. I grew up in Utah, but haven't lived there for 24 years. I used to get out of school early on Friday and have the day off Monday to have a long hunt with my Dad and brothers. We haven't done that in years. I was thinking of getting us all together again to do it next year.

I need Utah residents and avid hunters advice on a few things. Looking for the best place to handle all areas of interest.

-My father will be 80 next year, so his time hunting wont be much. He would likely stay around camp and road hunt at times. A location that would accommodate this would be great.

-We would need to have good success at getting 5 resident tags and one non-resident tag. Not sure if this is possible, haven't really looked into drawing odds.

-I would likely pack in a few days and hunt on my own (more experience hunting ((Colorado numerous times and Idaho a few times)). Somewhere that I can get a few miles in and not see as many hunters as the two above scenarios will more than likely come with.

What, in your opinion, would be the best location to try to put in for in next years drawing? Any help you can give would be great!

Thanks!

Might be good to mention what you want to hunt?

Assuming you are planning for general deer?

Just pick a unit with good odds and close to one of the five residences that is willing to scout or area someone is familiar with at least.

You may draw first year (I believe most units, you will not for any weapon) but points in 2017 and plan to draw 2018 would be a Much better odds)

If you put in as a group all can hunt or none. If you put in as individuals the others can still go and help on the hunt. You may have a better chance at a few tags. They just can't carry guns. With you dad at 80 , not sure if you can wait to long. In almost any area if you get a mile or two off the road . You leave most of the crowds behind.

I am in the same boat as you I grew up there but now I live elsewhere. General Season hunts will be your best bet. You can draw the first year with a lot of luck not sure of the odds but most likely it will take a point to hunt the general seasons.
There are a few good zones that have more deer than others and can accommodate you Dad as well.
It will take some planning on your part but I would get started as soon as you can.
