Looking towards 2018. We started accumulating points for general deer since Utah split the general units. So I was thinking I could hunt this unit 2 consecutive seasons. Next year with my points with my son, 2019 with my wife and her points.

Get there a week early both seasons.

Do you think this and hard hunting would result in a quality buck?

All I know is that it's a huge unit, some remote country, so I think it has potential.

I've been putting in for the late muzzy hunt the last couple of years but that may never happen.

I'd like to get the thoughts of folks that are familiar with this unit.

Getting a quality mule deer tag, even applying in multiple states, is hard to come by.

I rate boulder pretty low on quality bucks. I heard since they split units up for general buck it's gotten better but even cow elk hunting in Nov, I do not see a lot of big bucks down in the valley rutting or on mountain.

Though remote it has a lot of roads and access for 4x4s and atvs.

If there's a late November muzzleloader hunt for boulder (I would have to look it up I didn't think it was one of then), I would definitely not use my limited points on it.

Fishing is great in the fall there and if you are looking at general muzzy it's a great time for bugling bulls. Taking small bucks shouldn't be too hard so if you want to hunt hard to try and find a quality buck with being content taking a smaller buck if u don't find one, I think I will be a great experience. Maybe try it one year and decide if you want to try it again the second year.

One of my favorite mountains.

Good for Elk, Good for fishing, not to good for deer. Better deer hunting on Fishlake and Dutton IMO. Beautiful time to be on the mountain to fish though during the fall. Good luck.

Boulder is a way better deer unit than fish lake and dutton. I don't get the love affair with fisklake, it's really not that great of deer hunting. It use to be unreal in the early 80's, but now that they have a highway running through the middle of the unit and atv trails all over the mountain it's pretty poor. Boulder has some very good deer hunting quality/quantity if you know where to look. That being said portions of that mountain can be very poor also. Utah has a few general units with big, big buck potential. Boulder is one of them.

I hope you guys are right about the good potential. I have a late muzzy tag. Either way it should be a good hunt being able to hunt that country. Beautiful!

Never hunted the boulders before until this sping. I had a lion tag on the unit and I was amazed by the number and quality of bucks I saw on the winter range. Not sure about their where abouts come the hunts, but we seen some quality deer. just my 2 cents.

Pushin,

Huge, HUGE unit. I've applied for the late muzzy tag the last couple of years but with only 1 tag my PPs don't mean much.

General rifle they are probably a "needle in a haystack " proposition.

But haven't ruled that hunt out although I'm asking around about other General units.

May hunt elk in that unit in the future so a couple of deer hunts prior my pay dividends.

But I appreciate the post/comment.

My dad and I both have 8+ pts for utah general season and 7 for limited, we are trying to plan an out of state hunt. The last time I hunted Utah I had a 9 mile tag and killed a very nice 4x4. I was told I was very lucky for finding a buck like that there. Im looking into Plateu area, or Pine Valley / Zion, any help?
