Hi Guys, Looking on Getting my 13 yr old Son out hunting elk. Any help on this hunt would be great. Been on this site for years but don't post much. I'm a Nevada hunter so scouting is limited. This is not my usual format but distance and school comes into play. Not looking for honey holes but general info on quality of the area, hunting pressure. Willing to work for a good bull and patient, ethical hunting family, will to go anywhere in the State and keep info. confidential.

If it were my kids tag and I didn't have access to private land where the elk weren't as tuned up, I'd have him shoot the first bull we saw. Including spikes. This hunt can be extremely difficult. Especially if you aren't previously experienced in an any bull unit. If I had any info that was useful I'd give it. But I don't think lookin for a trophy is a good thing to do on this tag

Thanks, will keep expectations in check. Have spent enough time in Eastern NV to get spoiled. Sounds like private land access would be good but I'm sure a $$.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-13-17 AT 08:23PM (MST)[p]If you are talking about general any bull hunts, the odds of success are low, <10% typically. Going in blind to try and take a otc bull in Utah will require a lot of luck and hard work.

I would pick a unit that provides small game opportunities and some fishing or something else to fill in lows mid day with a kid.

Private would be best option.

I don't know if this rule is new this year or not but on page 22 of the Utah field guidebook this year it states that a youth hunter with a youth any bull tag in September can harvest a bull, spike or cow. As long as they are hunting an any bull unit.

Not to be confused with a GS any bull tag that is purchased for a youth.

A youth elk hunter made the cover of Eastmans journal this month. She drew the youth any bull elk tag ! Read the article she shoot a tank !

It sounds like your kid has a great opportunity ahead of them. Hunting elk with a rifle during the rut should be a blast. I hope with the knowledge that your kid can harvest any elk that you come across will greatly lighten the pressure of trying to get your kid on a branch antlered elk. Good luck!

Thanks for the heads up on Eastman's Cover, and yes a opportunity for a branch antlered bull would be a blessing for Dad and kid. Time seems to haul ass in this modern world and this will break up groundhog day syndrome. Taking this hunt with an open mind, as we all know mental becomes the game once reality set in combined with luck.

I would offer you more advice or starting points but I've actually never hunted bull elk before. So I don't have a lot of knowledge to really help you out. Or I would have
I'm glad Wipiti gave you some help.

Keep us posted on here.

My daughter killed this bull last year on the Zion unit youth hunt. We didn't hear one bugle and ran into tons of people "helping" other youth hunters. Ironically we didn't see any other youth hunters...

This was the only elk we found after 4 days hunting

Thats a great Youth bull an big smile, sounds like the hunt went thru a range of emotions with a nice prize at the end, well done!

Shoot me a pm. I would be more then willing to give you some places on public land that usually hold bulls and have always been good to us on this hunt.

Hi All !! I just wanted to follow up and say thanks to some great guys in Utah. My Son and I got to hunt bull elk together and better yet have the chance to be together and learn some new country and different hunting methods in the rut. Spent 2.5 day scouting the western part of the state and saw some huge bulls but in private land. Decided to move east and hunt the Red Cloud loop for a couple of days in the rain and cold, Sunday morning was a soaker. We saw a few elk on the opener Sat. and not much after that. The elk didn't seem to be talking where we were at so locating them was hard. It had been a long time since I did the pecker pole dance with all the blowdown and trees, we just don't get that in Nevada much! Everybody we meet was fantastic, a guy name Tom north a Vernal even offered to bring us up a battery for Sunday as our side by side moan a bit starting one time ( thats truly unheard of). We decided to work our way back toward home and hunt the Western part of the state. We went out Tuesday Morning of the youth hunt and it was wet nasty and windy. We called in the rain and hunkered down, we called a bull in, heard the crash of timber breaking and never saw him but cut the track on a ridge. We were so busy fighting the rain and wind that we may have let our guard down. We were disappointed but really had some great hunts. A big Thank You to Paul and Dillon for the help, it make it a little easier to sleep at night wondering what you have got yourself into on a two man out of state elk hunt. The people of Utah were Great every where we went. I hope all hunters can accept that we all one day may hunt an out of state tag and we can show some courtesy to each other as the out of state hunters have their work cut out for them. I would have posted sooner but life really kicks in gear when you get back from a hunt, Oh boy !!! Hope to get some pics up.

Can't wait to see the picks man I was worried you weren't gonna post about the hunt.
