Boulder Muzzy deer

I'm heading down in a few days. Looks like the weather is really too nice. Anybody know if the deer are still going to be mostly up in the aspen or maybe some movement down to the winter range?

I was planning on hunting the south end of the mountain.

Also does anybody have a recommendation on a place to stay? I will be prepared to camp but a motel room is nice on these short days.

I have the equivalent tag on Monroe. Most of the deer are low already.

Thanks, that will give me an idea on where to start. Hope the rut will get started too. Last night is the first sign of rut activity I've seen here in SD.

Well deer hunt kind of sucked. Too nice. Bucks appeared to have been pushed down into thick cedar, pinon-juniper country, no rut. Does were from 10,000 ft on down. I saw only one nice buck.

Having said that, the country is beautiful, I saw some nice elk. Interestingly, I saw a lynx. I am 100% positive it was a lynx. When I got home I tried to find out about lynx in Utah, sounds pretty rare.

Also must be a lot of elk on the mountain, hardly a blade of grass left up high. Or cows of the bovine type.

goldhunter, its sounds like you didn't connect on a buck??? any shots???

No, I did not connect. Didn't really even get a shot at the one decent buck I saw. It was just on some private ground, maybe a 175 type buck. Found him on the first day, so I was thinking I would look for better, even if he drifted back onto public.

Did not see another shooter. Saw quite a few doe bunches up high, but none had even a small buck with them. Hiking showed lots of tracks in the thick pinon juniper, but I'm not good enough hunter to get one out of that stuff. maybe with a rifle you could shoot across canyon, but not muzzle-loader.
