San Jaun late elk

It can be a pretty hard hunt. A lot of bulls are broken up and a lot move to private land. Weather plays a bigger factor on SJ than most units.

Late hunts by their very nature are a wicked beast. But the simple answer to your question is...no, it is not.

I'd hunt boulder late over SJ any day and with any other weapon over the SJ. But that's just my opinion. I've also heard private can be a headache on the late hunt for SJ.

"We don't have a gun problem we have prescription drug problem."

Thanks guys for the replys, being a non-resident 1000miles from units no real scouting except getting down there a week before the hunt. But it looks like 3 or 4 years out for a tag, good luck to everyone in the draws this year

A late hunt under those circumstances without a guide would be a tough hunt, in my opinion. I think you really have to know where animals are likely to be, and then account for unpredictable weather, etc to be successful.

Not saying you can't pull it off. There are a lot of great bulls killed on late hunts every year across the state.

I can't speak for the Boulder.
But I have seen plenty of ?good? bulls, on public land, late, on the San Juan...
Broken up, not a problem! You see all the sheds that are picked up down there that aren't broke every year...
Private land? Only if the weather gets real bad early...
But I will agree with kk, weather does play the biggest factor, ?during? the late hunt!!!
The elk are easy to find when there still high, and when they all moved low...
But when there in transition, good luck, all bets are off!!! Most of the big boys have moved off regardless of weather... But that's why there big! Very few ?monsters? have been killed on ?late? hunts... And the San Juan is one of them!
You can be watching a hand full of ?good? bulls for 2-3 days in a row, weather comes in, and good luck seeing a elk for a couple of days... And hopefully it isn't towards the end of your hunt! Believe me, I know!
You will be scrambling if you haven't done all your homework, and I hadn't...
I'm not a ?guide? guy, but if your considering a late hunt, consider a guide! And if your considering the San Juan, consider BTO. Those guys have done there homework!!!
Sorry to ramble...
Not trying to discourage, it can be done?
Good luck when you do draw a tag!!!
