Hello all,

I have been a lifetime mule deer hunter; mainly I have spent my time hunting in Utah and Idaho. I would like to give whitetail hunting a try and was looking for some advice.

I have been looking at Kansas but not sure if this would be a good place to start. I am open to traveling to the Midwest for a good hunt (I live in Utah).

I would like to hunt Muzz or rifle. I would be willing to pay a tresspass fee for a good opportunity to harvest a decent buck.
I would also be interested in getting a tag for my 12 year old son and possibly my father. Would really be interested in a late hunt.

Thanks!!

Jason, I live in IL not sure about if a NR can draw for shotgun tags, but if you can, I'd be glad to take you and yours to the islands on the IL river to hunt. I have a boat etc. Just like to help out. The islands are in Calhoun county (Diamond Michael Hurricane) it's just below Pike county. There is always a chance to harvest a nice deer. Also a friend has 80 acres in Cuba MO. I have never hunted it before but always planned to, you can buy OTC rifle tags and I'd be glad to take you all if you would like, with my friends permission of course. PM he if you like and I'll send you my phone #.

There is excellent hunting to the east of you. I think I would first give a good look to Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, and Washington before I traveled any further.

Thanks for the great advice. I really appreciate it. I am check some areas in surrounding states.

Joe,

I really appreciate the offer. I will PM you my contact info. If there is any help you ever need (hunting out west0 let me know.

There are plenty of good whitetail hunting opportunities in MT, I would definitely apply for a tag there, especially since you want to rifle hunt.

ID, has late hunts in the Pan Handle... Tags are easy to draw (I think they're OTC (drawing a deer tag in MT is going to be tough with out 3-4 points), aslo another state I would look into is WY, check out the NE corner.

To be honest there really is good whitetail hunting pretty much in every state, just have to do your homework.

woodruff!

As a lifelong Whitey-quester until about 15 years ago, I'd be amenable to bestowing the virtues of some above-average-by-a-long-shot preferred vicinities for Whitetail in and through the NE of Wyo. Yes, there are bigguns in here--gotta dig, gotta get 'em 'bout dark at times--but that's about all, kinda' like Deer hunting. Rut and Just-pre-rut are the seasons.
I still hunt these places upon occasion--the quality of the basic Toad seems to not be on the decrease. I do frequent the region for any number of reasons year-'round (usually on the way to or returning from Deadwood to gamble away windfalls).
Too bad I'm hooked like a junky on MM's and BigABulls to be entirely current, but I do believe what I hunted year before last and two before that and two before that may still pertain and contain some validity.
Heck, it's only an hour, or at most two, away from me.
Black Hills of SD has got some nice hunting, also.

I wouldn't pass up looking at Colorado either. We have some tremendous whitetail hunting on the river bottoms in eastern Colorado. These bucks are not hunted hard at all, very little pressure and you can draw some units with 0-2 points and archery tags are always 100% in drawing a tag. Now that could change in the next few years, but for now, an archery tag is almost automatic. Anyways, check it out. I have some great pictures of deer harvested by clients of mine at my website. Go to www.colorado-adventures.com and check it out.

There are TONS of places to go for whitetails. If you want to try Kansas give my buddy Dan a call. visit www.highplainshunting.com I've been there several times and am planning on returning very soon! My dos pesos!
