Hey fellas looking to put in for archery area 76. Would this be a good tag to get if a guy was willing to backpack in? Does a guy have a good chance at getting a mature buck in the 170-180 class? Trying to get some opinions on a good DIY solo hunter archery tag.

Any of the "high Country" units (and just about every unit in the state) will produce that class of buck and many bigger. Harvesting it with a bow is the challenge. I don't know what your point situation is, but you may look into other units depending on how many PP's you have.

Wow that's awesome I don't have any points at all I am from Nevada and am looking to spend my vacation somewhere else, kinda try something different. I appreciate the info. So would there be a kind of general area easier to draw or is 76 still doable with no points?

Hey thanks guys I do appreciate your input. If it takes 5 points for a archery tag I'll try a different area, don't want to burn my youth away waiting haha I would be more then happy with a mature 170 class buck.

Ok so I see areas like 29 and 34 where a non resident has about 100% chance of drawing, do you guys know if it's decent hunting does a guy have a good access to public land or is it mainly private? Kinda looking for a general area that I have a fighting chance as long as I am willing to hike and work for it.

2 general rules of thumb:

1: a good buck can be killed in nearly any unit in colorado, there's just more of em in some units.

2: for the most part, the more points it takes to draw the better the unit.

Ya some of those tags seem out of reach to a young guy but you'll be surprised how fast time flys. Put one of those tough units as a first choice then a lesser unit as your second and hunt it while building points. If you don't get a good vibe that first season pick a different 2nd choice for next season. The other shot you have is these reissue tags that go on sale every Tuesday starting in August. You'll be surprised at what shows up on the list. If I was in my 20's again I'd look at some of those early season high country tags. They're built for young legs and some don't take a lot of points. Good luck!
